This might be stupid but I was just curious to know what everyone enjoys more. Working out at a gym or working out at home.
I personaly like working out at a gym, though I have never worked out at home. Must be good.

I have a pretty nice home gym ( 300lb Olympic Weight Set)and used it for years. I also belong to Worlds gym. I enjoy doing both, but getting out to the gym seems more for me now since I once worked out only at the house for years.

I do both. I like going to the gym on days when I know the crowd will be light; the other week I got into a nasty trade of words with some women just because I asked if she was using a pair of dumbbells. Things like that make me want to stay at home, but there are also a lot of really cool people at the gym, so it's a toss up.

I workout at a gym while at college and at home during the summer...
At Home:
Good
-because I don't worry about what I lift (I try not to at a gym but sometimes it gets to me when I hear people RIGHT behind me talkin about how something like their arms or whatever is probably stronger than my chest =/)
-I can get a spot (I don't say much at the gym so I really never ask anyone for a spot.. at home tho I just tell my brother he's spotting me and thats that..)
-I don't ever have to wait to use anything
-I can workout with my shirt off (Hey I just like to WO that way.. though I wouldn't wear a tank/etc to the gym)

Bad
-No machines (I only have freeweights and a leg extension on my bench)
-At home the most I can get on my good bar is about 180-190 (so my 200 deadlifting goal won't be tested at home)
-Get too distracted WAY too easily (on rest sets i'm over here on the msg boards and then 5 min later... "oh crap i'm supposed to be on the next set")

At the gym:
Good
-Lots of machines that cover almost any workout I can come up with (which isn't all that many but still covers a lot)
-Lots of nice pro dumbells/bars/etc
-Don't Get distracted.. no TV or computers around for me to wonder to in between sets...

Bad
-I usually don't get a spot and try to do things any way I can.. so prety much no forced reps
-People that take FOREVER to do something on a machine.. one guy I swear did about 5-6 sets on the weighted ab crunch machine.. waiting about 5 minutes in between a set.. yikes =(
-Stupid people giving stupid people advice... I admit I barely know that much about this stuff.. but when I hear "hey man just take some cell-tech and that'll make your bench go up in no time" I just have to wonder a little bit....
-It being full.... sometimes I get there late and it feels like there are so many people over by the dumbell rack that I can't even see the weights...

Between the two I would say the gym.. its got a lot more stuff to do and usually I can avoid my annoyences by going early... anyway it seems easier to wake up and say "i'm going to the gym.. now now.. 30 min later... your not there yet.. go go go" instead of being at home where I usually end up thinking "my weights are just over there.. I can workout later on today"... at least to me anyway

*******WARNING- This message contains constant complaining*****
fireloard, I have the same problems as you when it comes to getting distracted at home, but I also hate waiting when I go to the gym. I was so upset yesterday, I went to the gym straight after work (in crap traffic) and intended on using the cable machine for my first exercise, I get to the gym and I swear this guy, whom I've never seen there in my life, was hogging the cable machine doing 20 repetitions of some weird exercise, for multiple sets, for at least 10 minutes. I was in such a bad mood at that point that I wanted to go home, but I stuck it out and I am better off, I suppose.
And my other gym gripe, which I think falls in the same line as yours about the amount you lift and other peoples crap opinions about it, is that most of the time I go to the gym in very loose clothing (sweatpants and a big t-shirt) and people assume that because I'm a girl, my workout cannot possibly be as important as theirs because they are men and I obviously must be hiding my weak girl body underneath all that clothing. I hate having to justify my using a bench when Mr. 250 lb-grunting-on-every-rep comes in and wants to use it.
Ok, it is out of my system. Sorry to anyone who might have read this and thought I was in need of prozac.

I once watched a guy grab a mat and do his entire ab routine under the cross over cable machine, THE ONLY YOU in the GYM!

I enjoy the gym as opposed to the home gym, personally. But I must give credit where credit is due. I started on my home gym, and continued to use it for years before I joined a gym. At home I was able to build a foundation with basic lifts, and work on form and confidence. However, the gym just offers a lot more variety when it comes to equipment (machines, cables, hammer strength). I just seem more motivated at the gym. But I do have my peeves about the gym, as you all do. People, the gym is not a socializing meeting grounds, so either shut up and finish your sets, or get off and let other people in. And my favourite, guys (it's usually guys) sitting on a bench or a machine talking on their cell phones!! Don't we love them?!?!

Hmmmm I feel like a very lucky one (and I don't know if I should say this....) Ah well.
I own a gym in South Western France. It's not a huge thing just a small cosy gym but with all the necessairy machines and dumbells. Anyway, what I do is to work out all by myself very early in the morning before opening the gym...... This is sooooo cool. I wear almost nothing (it's hot here now!!!), I put on the music I want AND I have no stary faces around or peeps taking my dumbells......

Lol, sorry folks, I couldn't help that one!

YOu own a gym? now that is convenience. And wearing almost nothing. Sounds great!! :)
My dream is to do that same...well not the wearing almost nothing part, but owning my own gym. That would be great.

I'd LOVE to be a gym owner. I am a social person, (maybe you've been able to tell) so I like the gym environment and seeing my progress relative to that of other people in my gym. If I had to identify the worst few things about my gym it would be MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC, oh and the MUSIC (3 days last week the same song was on the radio when I came in- horrible programming), it's too weak! Also, the hours. We don't have a 24 hour gym in my little town. My gym is closed on Sundays, and at 5 pm on Sat, 8 pm the rest of the week. Sometimes I can't make it in before they close and I get very frustrated.

I do like gyms as well but I rather working out at home no risk of closing down on me which ditrupts my workout in the lat 2 years I`ve been more off then on.

So, starting last week got my equipment setup (suqat cage and vertical dip/abs station, skipping rope) need to get a good bench and more weights.

I`m able to do lifts I want when I want no waiting for ppl.

I also want to open my own gym one day.

Anytime an asshold monopolies a machine for uninterupted minutes on end without allowing you on, the only thing you can do after making it clear that you want to work in is say something to management.

Get someone from management to come over with you and have them inform the asshole that the equipment has to be shared. With management standing there, be clear on what's fair-1 set each, or whatever.

your welcome to it, but last time someone went to get management becuase they wanted to curl on the platform I was using for bent rows, things didn't go to well, and said management never said anything to me again.
needless to say, I too prefer to work out at home.
I guess I'm just the "wrong sort of clientele."

Of course it depends on the gym. If they won't listen it might be time to consider another gym. Allowing a selfish ass to do 5 sets isn't an option.
