In addition to weight training, I want to start doing aerobic exercise, too (if anything, just to do something for 10 minutes before my weight training sessions as warm-up). I hear to lower cholesterol (which is one of my goals), aerobic exercise is the best - that's another reason why I am looking into this. I'm soliciting opinions: is a bike or elliptical/cross trainer better? Do you have any specific manufacturers or machine models that you like? Thanks again... --John

Either one will work. As far as machine model...just get one you can afford. The bells and whistles (in my opinion) are unnecessary.
Good luck!

I find using the bike gives my legs a good work out, whereas the elliptical machine targets my shoulders, arms and legs. I also seem to get a better cardio session with using the bike. I believe this is true becasue of the leg muscles being bigger and working harder alone, then using arms and legs on the elliptical.

I don't like the motion on an eliptical, it's just not..natural.

I prefer the elliptical trainer 'cause it gives me a better work out and because you are NOT sitting down........
Just take the one you like the most, or better, change once in a while.

Going to the gym, I get to mix it up between the treadmill, xtrainer, bike and stairmaster. They all work well, but I like the xtrainer best . I find it easier on my joints, particularly my knees. They are expensive to buy though, and the cheap ones are just that!

I prefer the bike also. For the opposite reason as Philia stated, because you ARE sitting down. Everyone has an opinion. I welcome the chance to sweat and read/watch TV simultaneously and take a load off my back for any length of time....

I prefer the elliptical, but I am VERY picky in the oens I like. I love Precors, it is my favorite because it allows you to chose your arm motion (no bars). I am finally starting to like the Reebok Trac after a couple months of refusing to use it for more than 5 minutes at my gym (my gym doesn't have the Precor :( ) I think I get a better total body work out when I use the elliptical, but what I try to do to keep my cardio from getting boring is switching up every 15 minutes. I do 45 mins of cardio before my workout, using 3 different machines. Then after my workout, I usually ride the bike, or walk briskly on the treadmill.

I use either bike or treadmill. I find that the eliptical really hurts my back.
