i have been getting terrible headaches everytime i lift in the lower back part of my head. so i went to the doc and he said they were tension headaches. All he said was to not lift for 2 weeks and to take advil when i get them and if they come back to go to a personal trainer. There has to be something else i can do for it. i want to get back in the gym so bad but am afraid that the headaches will come back. they are VERY painful. has anyone else ever had this happen? is there anything i can do? please help!

tre - that's a new one on me. If it was me I think I'd find another doc and get another opinion. I can't imagine what he/she would think that a personal trainer could do for you.

Tre, I agree with Mike, I think you should find another doctor. I am very prone to headaches and have found that I need to stretch my shoulders & neck after each workout, to keep them from tensing up-which would lead to a definate headache for me. It doesn't seem like a tension headache would only strike during you weight session though. I'm not a doctor but have done lots of reading on headaches. Did your doc mention your blood pressure and if it's good? Good luck, I hope you're better soon..in the meantime I'd say not to lift anything until you find out exactly what's causing the pain.

Tre, do you only get these headaches when doing certain exercises? Because I think I've had a similar problem, not that I have a solution for it.

Do you drink enough before and during weight training?
Maybe water could be your solution.
A good warm up can help your blood circulate faster as well and maybe that could help too.

One thing that really helped me was ventilation (Thanks Arnold). It was too hot and stifling where I was working out.
