Yes...as long the walks are rather brisk. However, you will need to increase the intensity at some point down the road. You have to continually increase your heart rate to really maximize the fat loss...
and add "hills if you can"... also break out into a jog once in awhile if you can (no injuries). Eventually you will need to increase intensity as Robert mentioned. Short intense sessions are good to burn fat too. Maybe over time you can add brief periods of running to your walks too boost the heart rate. Try wearing a heart monitor, this is helpful in monitoring if you are keeping your heart rate up enough to burn fat.

Jnellie you now know how much I like HIIT. Try to (as Leslie says) put in some small hills or jog once in a while to make it into a faster fat burning (interval) work out.
Take it slowly in the beginning and then you'll get stronger and faster every time.
