Well Ive been on the FT program for 4 weeks (been trainning for 2-3 months) now and Im really improving in all my muscles BUT the side delts.... I just cant seem to get stronger with the side delts. But my left arm is big time weaker so I gotta wait for it to catch up to the other arm.... Im just getting impatient here.

You guys got any advice of what I should try ? Like *anything* at all ..

btw when I do my sets of lateral raise , i separate my weight as follow: 1 rep=60-70% of max and 2-3-4 its 90-95% ....

Thx in advance , later

lateral raises are pretty hard...I can barely get in 2 reps with 25 lbs. Just make sure the form is right and don't worry much about the weight now.

It takes time. Be calm and it will happen. Your shoulder were not designed to lift heavy weight during lateral raises. be sure to work all three heads when lifting, this will ensure proper growth. Try This routine: Bent Lateral raises, Behind head Barbell Presses, Standing lateral raises. Do 5 sets of each and Rep at 14 -12 -10 -8 -6. Increase the weight as you do each set. do it for 8 weeks.

I would be careful of behind-the-neck presses due to the strain that occurs. Shoulder presses with dumbbells, front and side lat raises(standing and seated) all work. When you're in your mass phase lift heavy with fewer reps(last set with 4 reps). I believe that you warm=up then blast them short and sweet then go on.(10 reps warm-up with 8-6-4 reps). In your definition phase then go lighter with more reps to increase your endurance. Remember that genetics too play an important part in whether your delts will grow, but it will take some time. Vary your workout every feww weeks to give your muscle a new stimulation to grow with and not get stale or used to the stimulation.

I pretty much share the same problem, but i also have weak front delts as well! What makes it worse is that my triceps grow if i just mention them, making my shoulders look even smaller!!! What i've been doing the past few weeks, are cable side raises.I can get a really good squeeze and keep good form on these....try em out.

why drag up such an old post?

Anyhow - thumb position on lateral raises is more of an opinion than science.

Some people think turning the thumb down increases strain on the rotataor cuff, others think it increases the 'squeeze' at the top.
Let's look at the movement, when raising a dumbbell laterally, if you are plams down, or more palms facing thighs, which is a natural position, you have a more straight line of resistance and the lateral head of the deltoid does the work to lift the lever (your arm).
What is achieved by turning the thumb down? You have now rotated your shoulder joint and arm forward, the lateral head is less functional and you have involved more rotator cuff, rear delt has to kick in to assist.

I prefer the palms facing the side of your thigh(anatomical position), I feel it is more comfortable and safer than rotation while raising your arm to the side.

I would think and expect some one with such lauded certs and experience as you claim, (what was it military trainng, and home many PT certs? as well as 13 years of kickboxing and powerlifting competeing) would know that answer Jon.....or maybe one of those fat trainers might.
