Hi I just turned 19 and I have a serious question. All my life I have gluttoned and ate and never really exercised. Last March I weighed about 224 lbs. and my waist was 39 inches it was time i got serious. I started working out with weights and doing some cardio i cut down my caloric intake from 3000 to about 1800. Now i weigh 180 and my waist is 36. But for some reason i just can't seem to get rid of the flab that is there. I mean when i look in the mirror my upper is pretty cut an my belly it doesn't look too bad but my love handles still portrude at the sides and when i sit down its even worse i mean i have so much flab and loose skin hanging. I can feel my abs under they are hard but there is a layer of fat covering them and I have stretch marks. I have been killing my self in the gym and doing intense cardio 3 times a week for 30 minute sessions and weight trainng and following a strict diet provided to me by freetrainers. But the flab just seems to remain. I mean will it and the stretch marks ever go away. I need to know if there is hope because if there isnt then there is not point for me to go on or is this the price i have to pay for all those years of gluttony. Can i banish these love handles or no? or once the skin has been stretched can it go back to teh way it was I mean have i eaten so much back then that i possible have enlarged my stomach and stretched so that it cant go back to it's original size and is that why it i have a spare tire around my midsection and love handles? If anyone can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

Wow I don't think I can help you with all of that but I can throw in some suggestions.. most cardio should last about 30 to 60 minutes.. if 30 minutes has been working for you then you might want to try pushing it up slowly (or all at once I guess) to 60 minutes or 90.. although I rarely see anyone ever do 90... Also when do you do your cardio? in the morning before breakfast.. on an empty stomach.. some of that would count for fat burning.. jnelle I think on this site has had better results with cardio in the morning before breakfast.... Also did you go from 224 to 180 on an freetrainers diet?.. make sure you adjust your weight in the nutritional section so it isn't giving you a diet to cut down a person that weighs 224... 1800 seems pretty kind of low for someone who is 180.. You might want to post up what you eat in this diet to make your ft goals... as far as stretch marks or loose skin goes... I've never been sure of either one of those.. but there have been posts on the topic in the past so you could use 'search' to try and find them... either way i'm not sure why you would say there is no point for you to go on.. going from 224 to 180 is some great progress... you shouldn't just bail on it if its getting rough to get results...

i saw that on television...i think you might have to get an operation to remove the skin...i'm not sure though...why don't you consult a doctor?
...sorry i couldn't be of much help

I can't say I really know the answer to this one, but maybe you could try decreasing your calorie intake and increasing your cardio. But if it really is excess skin, why not consult with a doctor about it. Don't give up though! Quitters never prosper! You should be proud of how far you have come!

I think for me to suggest anything I'd need to know how much your target weight is. I mean your waist size doesn't say too much about your overall build. Personally I have only ever been a 34 when I was skinny, and I know some people that can wear 28's. I know they always say that the last ten pounds is the hardest to loose.

Oh yeah, that makes a difference. Look at it like living healthy is the way your life is going to be, and it just becomes habit. You don't spend so much time looking for the "silver donut". Before you know it you won't be able to remember being overweight.

if you want to tone up your obliques, you might want to try one of two exercises. stand infront of a mirror and twist side-to-side as far down and as quick as you can. Do about 3 set of 100 3 or 4 days week. if you don't like that, sit in a chair. place a broom stick behind your shoulders and hold it with your hands. Slowly, bend from side-to-side tightening each oblique. do 2 set of 15.

3 sets of 100 might be a little much for some people. The biggest key to toning abs is your bf %.

i don't think your abs will be ripped by only keeping your bf% down, though i think it's a big part. you need to do exercises that tones them up also.

i agree that they need to be toned... but keeping bf% down is the biggest part of getting nice defined stomach... Everyone has a six pack somewhere it is just a matter of uncovering it

And overtraining your muscles will never get you "ripped".

first...try lifting very lite & try to do reps in continus motion. if u did 10 reps on the first day of a workout for any part try for 11 on the next day of that workout.
try this for at least for a month and u will see the difrence.

Arngrim, just stick with it a little longer and if it is fat, it will eventually shrink. If it is skin, you will have to get it surgically removed. I know this is not the answer that you wanted, but your can't shrink skin once it been stretched out too much. Just work on getting to the size you want then maybe consult a doctor about surgury, but get your bodyfat down first.

Stick with it Arn. A year ago I was 6ft,240lbs,40 inch waist. Today I'm 190 and 34 inches. The gut and love handles are the LAST thing to go. I'm still working on mine. Since I was considerably bigger then you and have managed to almost get them under control my guess is that it's probabley fat. If it's fat you may have just hit a plateua and need a kick start. That happened to me after about 30 lbs. I started using Ripped Fuel and it started falling off again. The other thing that seems to help for targeting those areas is stretching exercises. Right arm over head and stretch as far as you can to the left. Repeat for left side then both arms up and bend backwards. And I mean stretch until you feel your skin pulling. Do this long as you can.

The stretch marks are something else. They will not be going away. They will fade in time. I was lucky to escape without getting any but my wife has them real bad on her abdomen from having 4 kids. She even went to a plastic surgeon was told that they couldn't even be fixed with ps. They are probabley more noticable to you then anybody else anyway. When you get ripped and lean nobodies gonna notice them in the first place.

Keep the faith bro. Let me know how you progress. Like I said I've been there and done that. I'll offer whatever encouragment I can.

I am 73 inches tall and weigh 300. I have the big gut stretch marks. I have lost 30 lbs and almost 6 inches since march. I have been as low as 235 when I was in college. It takes a lot of work and dedication to get this done. Stay with it. It will come.

Well thanks, I really think that it has a lot to do with genes, but also a lot of lifting. I am a larger person and tht also might have something to do with it. I always let people know that for large bis or any body part you need to use the best mass buliding exercises and not worry to much about the others till you get the size you want.

Arngrim, I've read that rapid weight loss is the main cause of loose skin. Your loss doesn't seem that rapid but, of course, everyone's different. I also read that over time the skin almost always shrinks back, so maybe you just need some more-than-average patience. As far as your stomach goes, I've read that the stomach definitely has the capability to shrink back no matter how far it's been stretched. Again, all this takes time. Patience can be such a difficult virtue, but all you have to do is keep breating, keep working, and NEVER give up. Good luck my brother.

Hey Arngrim. I have some pointers for u thoguh my own experiences. (I'm 6 ft 175 lbs btw) On ur body u can't just spot reduce fat. Doing any amount of situps wont work if u have excess fat on ur stomach. Eating habits have a great affect on this. First of all if u want to burn fat try a high protein low carb diet. (this is especially important for dinner) Excess carbs turns into fat not fat a lotta the time. Also say for example u go to bed at midnite. The last time i eat b4 i go to bed is at 8 so the carbs will burn off. (most of them at least) Also i do all my situps, leg lifts, side twists, side bends, etc b4 i go to bed. This way u burn calories. Do oblique exercises for love handles, side bends, side twists, and twisting situps. Good luck man.
