Well you all of heard of "trying to lift weights"? A young man was on a bench and he was trying to "Lift weights" actually trying to do Flat bench barbell presses. I was beside him about 5 feet away and was doing bench presses.
All of a sudden I heard a noise like some-one trying to have a bowel movement, when I finished my set I looked over and this young male about 19yrs old, not more than 130lbs, had 2 plates on the olympic bar, total of 135 pounds laying on his chest, trying to roll it off. It took me and another gym member to take the weight off him and then he had broken ribs.
Please everybody.......If you cannot have a spotter or have any doubts that you will fail in a lift, Don't attempt it!
This young man told me he was trying to get strong so he can pass his fire-fighters entry exam!

Yeah readmy journal I got 225 up for 6 reps tried to get the 7th and got stuck 3/4 of the way up. Well the 225 came down to my chest and I had to roll it off my body and dropp it to the floor after I had sat up. Just a sore breast bone and my pride that has not happened in a long time. I did lower the weight and finish my whole workout so I got lucky. But next time I get me a spotter!!!!

Lesson here is, if you're going to lift weights without a spotter, don't put the clasps on the ends so you can roll the plates off one side at least by tipping the bar. That's what I do when I don't have a spotter. I'm also very careful not to do that one more rep that will put me in that situation when I'm alone. That kid must have been hurtin afterwards carivan, damn.

Mutt....you have experience and know what you are doing, not like you just started out!
And DP that is a good idea, and yes the kid was hurting and was helped out of the gym.
Take care guys!

You are my hero Mutt......lol
No seriously, I see guys struggling all the time in the gym, because they want to impress others. Do what you can and if possible go with someone so you can have a spotter.

I have to agree roni. There is a guy that just started lifting with a friend of mine and I. He was afraid that we would laugh at him. I told him that no one will laugh no matter what weight he has to put on there. In my opinion no one should laugh at another person lifting weights, or excersising, but rather congradgulate them for getting the courage up to start feeling better about themselves.

TIC is right I'd say it's probably hard to find training partners if your just gonna make fun of them. Besides, in most of us weren't very stout the first time we walked in the gym.

Hey all, glad I found this board. I am a beginner/intermediate lifter and wanted your opinion on something. Flat bench dumbell press, on the last rep of my second set the dumbell starting slipping out of my hand, my arm was weak and it semi-fell on my chest (65 lbs). It hurt a bit then, but too bad so i continued the workout and let it go. It was a little bit more sore than usual but not too bad. The next workout during squats the location started to hurt a bit more (and pretty sharp). So today I go and workout shoulders and tris and the pain got MUCH worse. Obviously I am going to take a few days off and take it easy, but do you think this is just sore, or does it sound like a rib or something worse. It just scares me because it is too close to heart/lungs, you know?

I would say the smart thing would be to go get xrayed and take a layoff for a couple of weeks. You just may have a cracked rib.

yeah, get x-rayed, definitely could be a broken rib. If it isn't broken, you will at least need to get the knots worked out of the muscles by a massage therapist.
Good luck!
