Some time before christmas I did lying triceps extensions with a barbell for the first time in my life. The movement caught me off guard and I "dropped" my left shoulder. There was a short pain, nothing I couldn't handle, and it went away quickly. I completed the set, figuring out how to stabilise my left shoulder the same way I did with my right (I'm right handed), and did three more sets. No pain.

My shoulder was a bit sore, but not much, and that went away. Then when I reached for something I got a shooting pain somewhere under the middle of my left biceps. The pain would be strong, and then slowly go away, and be gone until I did the same movement again.

I decided to take it a bit easy, and don't do anything that would give me any pain. I almost forgot about it... and then christmas came... and new years... and I got a bad cold... and didn't work out for 2 weeks. When I got back to the gym, I took it easy... making sure not to do anything that would put stress on the shoulder.

I did bent over twists... that was a really bad idea! Moving my arm and hand outstretched like that behind my back was a really bad move. The pain in the spot under my biceps was intense. I can't do squats unless I use the smith mashine, because I can't hold on to the bar properly. I can't use the pec dec, because grabbing hold of it to pull it forward is painful. When I shrug on my coat, I get the pain too... *sigh*!
I can do biceps curls and most triceps work as well. Chest exercises are OK as long as I don't let my hand go behind my back. I thought that by omitting shoulder workout from the plan, everything would be OK, but that's not the case, and I'm getting frustrated! My idea of exercise IS NOT 35 min on the treadmill or eliptical. I want to work with the weights!

I have to take it easy... remember to be careful when putting on a shirt or coat... not reach for things high on a shelf with my left hand... not so easy to do really, when the body is almost hard wired to do those things. I think I'm getting better... I really do... but I miss doing my proper workout. :(

Have you seen a doctor for this?

I know that some people who have shoulder problems can squat with a cambered bar instead of a barbell.

No, asimmer... I haven't seen a doctor. Nothing is broken, nothing is torn, and I know rest will take care of it. It is already getting better. I just miss my workouts, that's all. That... and having to remember to take it easy when I get dressed! I just needed to vent a bit I guess...

I didn't realise how many exercises used the shoulders. I can't do legs twice a week... that would kill me!:)

Anyways... spring is comming... slowly. I can use the treadmill at the gym, and take it easy, but it eats me a bit, that when I was doing so well I would have to stop before I reached my goal... the upside is that I now know what to do, and getting back to the normal routine will be a sinch. I have NOT given up on getting fit and slim!

Yepp!

Anyway... weither or not I want to rest, I have to. A really bad cold pounced on me yesterday, and the trip to the gym was canceled. :(

The thing I wanted to point out really, is that even if you stop working out one spot on your body, other exercises might be even worse. Abs seemed like a safe thing to work out, but bent over twists are murder on the shoulders.

When I get back to the gym I'll be more careful, testing a position before working out.

It seems that a week of being careful when getting dressed have done wonders for my shoulder, so I know that rest is the best medicine for it.
