The only exercises I can do for now for my chest are all on machines. I do all hammer strength: incline, 'flat', and decline.

My question is, do you place your back flat in the seats or do you "arch" your back like how you do when performing a bench press? A buddy of mine told me your back should be completely flat or else it's considered cheating, but I feel a better 'pump' or more use of my chest muscles when my back is arched - or lower back isn't touching the chair padding.

Please give me your input as I am very curious - thank you!

How is it any different than a regular bench press? Keep your butt down and shoulders planted and you're fine.

Keep a natural arch - no bucking to get the weight up. But flat isn't natural :)

I try to keep mine flat, especially on the decline hammer where the weight will literally make me start to slide up in my seat. I had to start wearing the seatbelt. On benches the last couple reps til failure I'll notice my back will arch, so I realized this is cheating and try to keep my back flat.
