On my fitness plan, I am supposed to incline bench. I'm going to be attending the gym alone. I'm concerned doing something like that alone (I'm only 5'2"). It's a gym on a military base, so having someone spot isn't really a possiblity. Any help? Is there something else I could do in it's place?

2 whys and an also first. Why no spotter at a military base? Why are you concerned about the incline bench? Also are you ok with regular weight?

To try to answer...if you're new to lifting you need to keep the weight light if you workout without a spotter. It's a real good idea to keep it light anyway until you have really good form on each movement. If you start out light on the incline bench it shouldn't be a problem.

To answer your why's...
I haven't actually started attending the gym, as I just signed up for FT today. My husband is going to take me down there and familiarize me with it this weekend. I am assuming there isn't a spotter because it's not a gym that employs people to oversee those working out. I could be wrong.
I guess I haven't inclined in a long time and am concerned that I may do something wrong and kill myself. You're probably right to start light. What would you recommend?

There's no magic number to start with. It would be great if somebody can spot and watch your form on each lift. Shouldn't be a problem on a base. By the time you've nailed proper form, you'll be able to work out weight amounts yourself.

You'll be doing sets of 4 . The first two sets are for warm up on that lift. Increase the weight on the last 2 sets. On the final set, you should barely be able to finish the last rep as a general rule for a rookie. Remember to get the form perfect before you go for heavy. Did I mention form is important?

If only there were magic for so many things right?! Sound advice...I appreciate it.

Form...Got it.

I think more than incline, I'm afraid to look like a donkey and make a fool of myself. I think that's what holds me back more than anything.

To the spotter point, you could always use dumbbells instead of the barbell.

If your gym doesn't have trainers you can always just ask the person next to you for a spot. Most people at the gym are pretty helpful.
