hey all
ive been jogging about 1.2km 3 times a week for five weeks and this week started doing HIIT. But i have been measuring my heart rate and it has gone up instead of down, and i havent noticed any changes in my fitness. Any ideas on why this may be??

You're only jogging 1.2km. There's your first mistake. You're not even jogging .75 mile. At least double it and pick up the intensity.

If your resting heart rate is going up, you are doing too much too soon and fatiguing your heart.

With cardio vascular exercise, you want to start with a small amount of time, do that for a few weeks, add a few minutes every other week until you reach your time goal. Then start to add intensity. Gradual progression is important to build fitness.

If you do a fit buddy search (or check the FAQs forum) there are some posts about resting heart rate and overexercising.

It would be my guess that it's not overexercising if it's only 3x a week. The body would normally begin to habituate to the exercise after 5 weeks anyway. I believe it's the time you're taking you heart rate that's the problem. Take your heart rate when you are truly at rest: as soon as you wake up or when you go to bed at night.
