Last Monday I joined a gym and signed up with a trainer. I am wondering if the sessions are to hard. I have not worked out for years and after one week of training, I am so sore. I am not even functional, I could barly walk for three days after the lower body work out and I couldn't even bring my arms up to my face to fill my cake hole, LOL. after my upper body work out. I am just wondering if we should be starting off a bit slower. 4 different exercises, 12 reps, 4 sets of each, lower body on Tuesday and upper body on Thursday. I also do an hour on the treadmill and abs. Is this to much to start off with??? If not, am I going to be just a sore after todays session of lower body??
I am getting scared to go tonight! Hope someone can help> |

Well, some soreness is to be expected since it's been ages since you've worked out. That will lighten up in time. If, however, it's actual hurt instead of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) you may wanna chat with your trainer in regards to lessening weight.-------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* \"He may be gone, but Sanjaya proved that it doesn\'t matter how talented you are - if you believe in yourself, you can annoy literally millions of people.\" Jimmy Kimmel |

That's the soreness you get in your muscles. It can take a day or two to show up, or sometimes just a few hours.

OK, I guess my question is, What is the difference between DOMS & actual hurt? AND, am I going to hurt as bad tonight as I did last week on the lower workout?
Thank you for your patience and help TimDay. |

The difference I find is the 'hurt' is a constant pain that seems to be there ALL the time. I find (for me) DOMS kinda goes away if I remain seated or still for a while, then move and it comes back. It's not real pain, just a kind of stiffness.

Well, first off, you don't need to do abs that much. They are a muscle just like everything else, so you need to rest them, too.
As for the DOMS, they may hurt a little tonight, but make sure you let your trainer know. Especially if it hurts while you are doing the movements. I don't get DOMS near as much as I used to. -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* \"He may be gone, but Sanjaya proved that it doesn\'t matter how talented you are - if you believe in yourself, you can annoy literally millions of people.\" Jimmy Kimmel |

WOW, I do abs every night. LOL and is funny because my abs do not hurt as bad as my legs and arms! I am thinking I should back off on the lower body work out to half the amount I am doing. I don't know,,, he is the trainer so I guess I will discuss with him tonight. I just don't want to hurt as bad as I did this last week. I need to be able to function daily. Thank you sooooooo much for all your help TimDay, I really appreciate it!

No problem.
There is a common misconception to get abs you need to work them everyday. Not true. Sure, you need to work them, but a lot of it boils down to diet. If you are eating crap, don't expect a ripped midsection. Muscle needs the rest time to grow. When you exercise, you cause little rips and tears to the muscle. It's when you rest they heal and build. Chat with him tonight. And enjoy the routine. Also, please fill out your profile. t -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* \"He may be gone, but Sanjaya proved that it doesn\'t matter how talented you are - if you believe in yourself, you can annoy literally millions of people.\" Jimmy Kimmel |

Good post. The one hr of cardio sounds like too much to me. But that's me. Keep up the dedication and you will feel great all the time.-------------- Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success. Ivan Montreal Canada (City of Festivals) |

A little warning regarding the DOMS. I don't want to scare you off, just want to make sure you know what you can/may expect. When I haven't worked out in a long time and go back to it, I hurt for 4-6 days afterwards. For me it's the leg workouts that kill me. It does go away and within a couple of weeks you likely won't get sore anymore. I totally understand your concern though, because it can hurt like hell! Make sure you keep moving throughout the day, this will help you not stiffen up as much. Good for you for getting back to working out!!-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there. -------------- The harder you fall, the higher you bounce |

Thank you for your responses carivan & flyonthewall!! I did work out, lower body, last night and feel great today, so I am guessing the worst is over. Don't get me wrong, I do hurt but it is not as bad as last week when I couldn't even lower myself down on the toilet....lol. I am stretching out ever morning, last week so that I could move, and found that it helps my muscles loosen up.
Man, I thought I was going to die that first week. Anyway, I am very excited about working out, it sure makes you feel great. That and a good diet, what a difference one week can make. I have never worked out like this before and never belonged to a gym, I LOVE IT! I am glad to hear someone comment on the cardio carivan, I am only able to do 30 to 45 minutes though the trainer would like to see me do an hour. I am only about 10 lbs over weight but my muscles are out of shape and he keeps telling me the cardio is the way to loose weight, go figure. Maybe he wants to see me loose the weight fast. Thank you again all for the response, it truly helps us newbies. "D" |

Cardio is not the be-all-end-all to weight loss. Keep an eye on your diet and what you eat. That's the biggest factor. -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* \"He may be gone, but Sanjaya proved that it doesn\'t matter how talented you are - if you believe in yourself, you can annoy literally millions of people.\" Jimmy Kimmel |

The cardio is Cardiovascular exercise. It heps develop heart and lungs. It will help a little weight come off if you burn calories and don't replace them, but like Tim said, it's the diet, and especially the weights because the muscle you will develop requires calories, therefor feeds off the fat stores in your body. Imagine if cardio did make us lose weight, alot of athletes would look extremely thin and wither away to nothing. Have fun and glad to hear you are feeling good.-------------- Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success. Ivan Montreal Canada (City of Festivals) |
