i posted a thread a while ago stating i was worried if i used meal replacement shakes i might lose muscle due to the lack of protein in some of them...
so i had a different idea , what about whey protein powder mixed in with different fruits and all blended up into one big smoothie?
tell me what you think , would be greatly appreaciated.

also if some are confused , i mean adding fruits into a blender and whey protein , so it comes out as a smoothie. Wouldnt it be the same as someone eating alot of fruit fro breakfast?

Sounds like a good idea. Definitely better than most MRPs that you can buy. It will also be cheaper to do that way.
I would recommend eating real food for breakfast though (whole wheat toast, eggs, oatmeal, etc.) and then having that shake 2 hours or so after.

I actually like to go to ice cream shops(real ice cream) and bring a bag of protein along. Have them mix this in the shake. Dam good stuff.

Having said the above, this is fine for instance bulking or even post workout. However, dieting this is not ideal.
Whey protein in itself is not ideal when dieting. Whey is an anabolic, you want something more anti catabolic, like a casein. MPI for instance is a great choice.
Remember, whey is very fast absorbing, thus also faster oxidation of amino acids. A 'steady stream' is a much more realistic choice when dieting.

Should Whey still be used in a PWO shake while dieting or is casein recomended? I thought that you were supposed to use whey after workouts because it absorbs faster?

Re-reading my post it states that it is 'fine for instance bulking or post workout'.
Some casein in your pwo shake will not hurt. The point is the fast absorption of whey....when dieting, this is not ideal. Fast absorption returns fast oxidation, thus you will be able to use less as your body is leaning catabolic anyway, and quick oxidation will do nothing to help you. Will just leave you hungry quickly and lead to a more catabolic state.
However, a slow release of amino acids is ideal to help tilt the scales. Casein proteins actually gel in the stomach upon digestion, thus insuring a steady slow stream of amino acids. This is an ideal scenario when dieting to help offset catabolism. (thus the term anti catabolic)

Ok. Sorry to sound stupid, but I am so confused. I'm sure this is all good information, but when you start talking anabolic and catabolic, and casein and whey and pwo and stomach turning to gel and I'm just lost now! I am working on weight loss. I get up at 4:20, drink a whey shake (1 scoop with 1 cup of skim milk). Go to the gym and lift weights. Go home, eat breakfast, then go through my normal routine (5 small meals a day, cardio 3 times a week in the evening, yoga 3 other days a week in the evening, weight training in the AM 5 days a week). I thought that I was doing a good thing having my whey before lifting weights, but now I don't know what I'm doing since my main goal is to lose weight? Do I stick with this routine? Thanks!

I quite often mix my protein with fruit. I buy frozen strawberries, or i put in canned pineapple, peaches, apricots etc., add either milk or yogurt or cottage cheese (blends up nice and smooth) or i use fruit juice, depending on my mood. I always blend it all together to the right consistency BEFORE adding the protein, otherwise it gets thick. I just put it at the end and a quick blend mixes it all up. Very tasty. Using frozen fruit is good because if you want a cold drink, blending with ice sometimes waters it down too much.
