Im completely new here, and this is my first topic. Heres a brief background on everything leading up until now and recent.
Im 19 years old, 5'10, 185 pounds, and have been active throughout my childhood years playing sports up until about I reached 17. Ive always ate what I wanted to eat and never ever saw anything wrong with it, but in the same regards, Ive always been very self concious of how I look and feel but never really took the time to do anything about it. I would always work out for a week, and then stop. I also have "man boobs" which has been the biggest concern for me thus far. I dont mean to seem disrespectful in any way but, I dont want to hear anyone mention Gynecomastia because I dont think that is a problem for one, and two, I believe that with a lot of hard work and a strict nutrition I can solve this problem on my own. Recently In about the beginning of this April, I began to work out for about an hour, hour and a half each day, 20 mins on average consisting of Interval running. Ive watched absolutly everything I eat and will only eat healthy foods from now on. My breakfast usually consists of 3-4 eggs scrambled with diced ham, some orange juice and a yogurt. I was a huge pasta lover but have maybe only had 2-3 dinners consisting of pasta since then. I try and read what all these websites say to do, but overall I just seem very confused, and have a lack of money to go to a gym or talk to a professional trainer of some sort. About 3 weeks ago, I walked into GNC and began talking to the one lady who worked there, and asked her what she would recomend for someone just starting to lift and lose some weight. She recommended me a supplement called The Diet Source, which consists of 4 containers of pills, and set me back about 50 dollars without really knowing much about it. Ive been using those since, but havent seen a significant change. About 2 weeks ago, my brother who plays football and weight lifts, gave me some extra supplements that he hasnt been using called Musclebuilder Stack by Muscletech. It consists of taking a pill of creatine each morning, Gagic 30 minutes before each workout, and Leukic right before working out. These and the pills from diet source I have been using for the past 3 weeks altogether, and the musclebuilder stack for 2 weeks. My workout generally consists of the following: 20 minites of interval training 4 sets of bench press at 150 pounds (Just changed it to 4x5 sets of 170) 3x10 sets of 25lb Incline dumbell flyes 3-4 sets of 10 reps of 120lbs The butterfly press where you sit with your back against the machine, and have your arms extend from your sides to a horizontal movement until in front of you (I have a gym set at home, but like said, have not been to a gym to really know what each exercise is properly named) 1 set of arm curls standing, another set where I just started to do where you curl the first motion 7 reps, the second motion 7 reps, and then the full motion another 7 reps Once in a while dumbell presses, and thats usually about it, with a few pushups thrown in throught the day Im very motivated and determined in having a good looking body from what Ive been accustomed to, and will work equally as hard to achieve this goal, especially in losing my "man boobs". The whole purpose of my background and current status was to inform you all of what I have been doing to improve myself. But I am very unsure if what Im doing is working, and If I should be taking the pills that I mentioned. ANY adivce at all is certainly appreciated and being looked forward to. Thanks everyone! First of all, I'd like to congratulate you for your determination and deication to getting healthy.
Now, I'd like to give you the best advice you can get at this moment in time....Read all the sticky threads you possibly can in each topic forum. They have answers to FAQ (frequently asked questions). Now, I will say this, forget about supplements from now. You need to concentrate on proper workout regimins and nutrition for now. Save that other stuff for later when you have a better idea of what you are doing!! Now, after you read, read, and read some more, this would be the time to post specific questions you may have. And I'll end this repsonse here. Being so detailed in your initial post, you have probably motivated the knowledgable people that post here to go out of their way to help you. Again, READ, READ, READ, and READ even more. That'll get you headed in the right dorection. Also, they have workout programs that are free. Sign up and get started!!! |

Also, forgive my typos and misspellings...I really need to take that extra little minute to proofread before I hit the "no turning back" submit button!!!!

Yeah, daily since Ive joined here I have taken a lot of time to read some of the stickies and posts. All I wanted out of this post though was just some advice to let me know if what Ive been doing will eventually help to cure my problem, and regain control of my body. I also just wanted to know if the Diet Source pills Im taking are actually healthy or if I should just stop taking them all together. The musclebuilder stack I can see where your coming from and will take them at a later time. But yea, if anyone else has anything else to input feel free to do so, if not then I appreciate the reply and advice Conan!

I am far from the an expert. All I can tell is what I have learned, mainly from this website. But I gathered 90=% of that info from the stickys!!! I've read EVERY single sticky. Have you?

OKay - it looks like you are only working chest and biceps?
Time to stimulate some muscle and growth hormone by working your legs - squats and deadlifts, my good man, squats and deadlifts. You should also add some back training - bent-over rows, one arm rows, pull-ups or chins. I would split it up into chest day, back day, arms and shoulders, and a leg day. Do your cardio after lifting, not before. and skip the cardio on leg day. Your calories need to be between 2,200 and 2,700 (guesstimate). Try a ratio of 40/30/30 to start with Pro/Carbs/fat. many people find that cleaning up their diet and getting that ratio makes a big difference. Stick to carbs like otas, yams and brown rice, plenty of vegetables. Good fats like peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, fish oil, olive oil. Plenty of lean protein - some at every meal and snack. you want to eat 6 times a day to really keep your metabolism up. The only supplements I would recommend for now would be a good multi-vitamin and glutamine - you can add a teaspoon of glutamine to your pre-workout shake, post-workout shake or meal, and maybe before bedtime - glutamine will help with recovery and isn't very expensive. Like Conan said - read the stickies in the forums, there is also a FAQs forum at the top of the page. -------------- Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak. I agree with Asimmer and Conan(sniff he done all growed up). KISS it. Meaning Keep It Simple Stupid....and I mean that. The biggest mistake you can make it overthinking this. Forget about supplements for now. AND for the love of all that is Weight Lifting SQUAT N DEADLIFT. You want changes and muscle those will do it.-------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! I wish everyone would get a partial amnesia and never use 'tone' ever again. (thanks Menance) 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |
