So why exactly is it bad for you? Is it because of the lack of creatine after one hour? or anything similar to my hypothesis? thanks again.

Here's an answer I got from wrestler on the very same thought:

Heres your textbook answer... ok, not FROM a textbook, but you know what I mean.

Part of the reason that exercise is so effective is because of the hormonal response it elicits as a result of the exercise. There are two main hormones released during intense physical activity: cortisol and testosterone. Both are necessary hormones, however, excess cortisol causes the body to store fat and burn muscle as a catabolic (muscle wasting) form of energy. Cortisol is elicited because of a survival response. Testosterone builds muscle, increases recovery, burns fat, and causes an anabolic (muscle building) response in the body. Now here's where we get into timing:
Testosterone production increases for the first 45 minutes of physical activity. It then starts to level and decline. Cortisol levels increase slightly slower than test levels, though cortisol eventually overtakes testosterone production at the 1 hour mark. From this we see that any activity after this point increases the catabolic response of cortisol, and is a waste. This will only be causing your friend to burn the precious muscle he worked so hard to build, and increase his recovery time.
Also, 1 hour is a long time for intense activity. Studies have shown that exertion levels significantly decline after 40 minutes of intense activity. Notice a trend behind this and hormone levels? It's not entitely coincidental.
Also, glycogen levels deplete after as little as 20-30 minutes of activity. After this, your body is running on stores, which is not nearly as effective. As a result, output will be limited towards the one hour mark, and this is not productive.

Anyone know how long I should rest between one-hour workouts to avoid evelvating my cortisol levels?

Your textbook answer will be that there is no textbook answer.

This will depend on what you are doing, and how intense you are doing it. Also, training experiance, work capacity, etc.

If we are talking 2 powerlifting workouts, 48 hours. Olympic lifters do low intensity workouts for 30-40 minutes and then do another 20-30 6-8 hours later. Keep in mind that in both cases these are highly trained individuals. There is no magic number.

So if I do an hour of interval training on a road bike, I should wait for a while before moving to weights (or vice versa.) Is that accurate?

Thanks!

depends...some lifter have 3 hour workouts...it just takes a LONG time if you're lifting heavy....personally my best workouts are between 2-3 hours long....I usually have hour workout when I am running late...and I am far from strong in those workouts...

If possible, yes.

Of course, like Menace pointed out, there are exceptions. I'm also an exception. When approaching competition time, my workouts stretch and may take up to 2 hours. However, since I am resting up to 5 minutes between each set, I am not worried about my cortisol levels as exercise like this will have a much reduced effect on hormone levels.

There are also things you can do to minimize your bodies response, for example a peri-workout shake that includes some kind of simple carbohydrates (well diluted).
