I'm curious as to how you all do your deadlifts? I have no intentions of ever doing weightlifting competitions, so I do deadlifts with multiple reps just like any other exercise. I keep seeing that a lot of people recommend only doing singles. I generally do 4-5 reps for 3 sets at around 85% 1RM. should i be doing this differently to build overall strength? only lifting heavy singles?

Singles...for the most paart are "safer"..in the sense that after say 2 or 3 reps...there's more bouncing of the plates off the ground....and more likly your form will break. Your butt wil pop up too early, and use more back etc. Thats why alot of people do just singles
I stay under 3.....but when I let the weight go, I stand up and regrab the bar.....I don't bounce the weight.

i pick it up, drop the weight, go down again, pick it up, drop the weight, etc. i normally do speed work with 2 reps for 8 sets or so like that. and on ME day i work up to a heavy single. but i dont go above 3! unless im doing like RDL, in which case i might do 8.

Yea low reps are best. I prefer singles or doubles also. Best way to gain strength and avoid form break down.

I like lifting close to my max, but it's not necessary. You can do it with ~90%

typically when i do speed work i do doubles with about 70% or so. sometimes, if i just feel like lifting heavy i do "speed" doubles with like 80 tho...

IT depends on you goals for the most part. But even if you want a BB look doing deadlifts with low reps and heavier weights will have better results than doing them each week for reps....sooner or later your lower back will get over worked.

I don't max on the deadlift, except in competition. So when I do singles its usually ~90-95%.
Also, treat each individual rep as a single. You don't have to take your hands of the bar, but... you know what I mean.
Mutt is rght about doing deadlifts each week. I prefer 3 week cycles.
The rest of the advice was good.
