I think you are better off buying either dumbbells and a bench, and a set of weight plates/barbell or join a gym for a while first.
The clients I have had in the past who couldn't be talked out of the multi-gym ended up buying dumbbells in addition and using those more, and then reselling the multi-gym for a lot less than they bought it for.

First check the ad section in your newspaper - people are always getting rid of weight sets and benches (those new year's resolutions fade and they sell the equipment, or they upgrade, whatever), also check online adsites, like craig's list - I have sold some of my extra equipment on there and there are new ads every day.
You should be able to get a decent bench that inclines (maybe even declines) for under 300 bucks. A full set of plates and barbell usually can be found for 100-200 bucks, dumbbells will vary - you can pick up a set that is adjustable for under 200 bucks (selectorized) or you can purchase seperate dumbbells and just buy additional ones as you need them.
As total beginner you may want to just pick up some 5's, 8' 10's and 12's and a bench, then see how quickly you progress and add to your collection.
I like the feeling of going back to the store to buy bigger dumbbells :) And you could sell your old ones, but you may want them for different exercises.

You also have things like Power Blocks for DBs. They are pricey but I sure like them.

This is an excellent suggestion. Most of us(males) use a variety of dumbbells for various things. For instance heavier for bench press, inclines, shoulders, etc. Then lighter for stuff like curls, wrist curls, one arm isolation stuff. Mike's suggestion would cover alot of bases and saves much room.
