I lift three times a week focusing on different muscle groups on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Tues and Thur I swim but recently my schedule has changed and I need more time so I was wandering if it was safe to do weght training and then swim laps or vice-versa. I swim for one hour or somtimes a little more.

I'm currently struggling with the same dilema, since I recently joined a Masters Swim program. At the moment, I try not to do weights and swimming on the same day, but if unnavoidable, I do my weights early in the day and swim late in the day. I think the smartest thing to do is try and have 6-8 hours separation and do wts first and swim later. The main thing is to listen to your body. If you are feeling like you're over training, re-jig your schedule. On the up side, swimming is non-impact, so far it doesn't seem to be effecting me adversely, even with the heavier training load. But I still find it very challenging to schedule all of my current activities, so I'm really watching how my body reacts.

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.
