In case you haven't yet heard an ecoli outbreak has been linked to bagged fresh spinach...so throw it out!
I just bought some last night...we had salads for dinner...we seem fine this morning...husband still says we have to toss it...I think he just doesn't want to eat his salad for lunch!!! J/K...toss the spinach! |

I don't know that it said....but one person has died...several are sick...they don't specify the brand as far as I know either....mine is a spring mix...just has some spinach in it...hubby says toss it any way...not worth the chance for a 4$ bag of salad....if anybody else knows something more specific...please share!!

No problem, besides, nothing could ruin your day like some e.coli in your spinach :)

What if you cooked the spinach? would that kill the bacteria?

I believe (I'm not a scientist) you're supposed to wash it first in really warm water or better yet boil it. I still wouldn't take the chance at this point seeing as it's spread to 9 states.

I actually saw a show about this a little bit ago....where a little girl got severely sick from e.coli from a bag of lettuce...something about animal droppings,or the workers not having a way to wash their hands in the field...and because it comes from a bag peopled are fooled into thinking it is sanitary and not washing it...if you boiled it I imagine that would cure the problem...but mine was a mix of different types of lettuce...so I just tossed the whole thing...I'm with Mike...wouldn't want to take the chance.

Now that I've been thinking about it I had a salad last night for dinner. It was one of those bagged ones too. I better check that out when I get home :surprised:

I always eat and feed my kids raw spinach and for the last week my oldest is having stomach craps and throwing up, I hope it's not the spinach, I have been thinking it's puberty setting in with her as she is 12 and going on 13 January and hasn't started the menstrual yet.
Well tossing the spinach and sticking with the all time favorit Brocoli! |

Yea I agree, that doesn't sound like spinach but then again I'm a guy so what do I know about "girl stuff" :) Can't hurt to visit the ol doctor for a check up. Hope everything is OK with your daughter.
Unfortunately I live in a condo so I can't grow anything outside. Gotta love common property :| |

I suggest going to the doctor and checking it out. I have my professional food manager certificate, we learned all about bacterias and other food born illnesses. They are no joke and your daughter is definitely experiencing symptoms of food poising.

And I just read an article that said cooking might not kill the bacteria and it is advised, at this point, to just toss the spinach out. washing will not get rid of it. I am wondering if it is actually within the cells of the food because they are grown with manure for fertilizer? That would seem to make sense that you couldn't get rid of it by washing it.
