Please let me know the benefit of working out before eating. I did this for a while and lost weight, but had to drink an energy drink to get through the class. Will eating a piece of toast hinder my weight loss/leaness? Thank you for your responses.

no in fact eating an hour before working out is best....working out on empty stomach is a bad idea....I would eat complex carbs with some healthy fats...and some protein
I like whole rye/wheat toast with smoked salmon, cheese, and avacado....tastes awesome....with some tea... protein shake with oatmeal with a banana works good.... | |

Morning meal for me before workout is my meal #2 of the day and It's 6 oz of Grapefruit, 1 Cup of Brown Rice, 1 Egg, 4 Egg White and 5 tbsp of Salsa. this is a meal eaten 45 minutes to 1 hour prior workout!
I don't beleive I could even concider anything thing done without a meal prior a workout, workout too me is just that WORK and I need fuel to work! |

Working out on an empty stomach makse no sense. It is only acceptible in extreme instances, such as getting ready for a contest(when you have mistimed your diet badly and need to make the deadline, so weight loss overall is your only concern), or if you are well overweight, you will actually do well burning more fat this way. (heavier folks have a propensity to naturally burn more fat, they have plenty to spare, they are naturally burning more calories..don't think so, try doing cardio or your workout with a 50 lb. weight strapped to your back.. :))-------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

Thank you for your responses. I always see "spinning before morning meal" or "30 minutes of running before morning meal" and thought it was a good thing to do. It might have been listed under pre contest training.
I'm not overweight but my weight fluctuates 6 lbs. It drives me crazy! I thought maybe it wouldn't fluctuate as much, if I didn't eat before a morning work out. Like I'd be burning store fat instead of what I just ate. I didn't know if eating 100 calories and burning 250 calories would do the trick or if has to be on a completely empty stomach to burn stored fat. Thanks again! |

Don't think of it in terms of calories subtracted from how many you burn in a fasted state. 'Fuel' will be used as necessary. Your body is smart, it will utilize nutrients as needed, not automatically turn them to fat...fat burning can still be easily acheived by the body with some fuel in it. -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

If your weight is fluxuating that much you may want to consider dropping some of your cardio and picking up the weights.I had that same problem myself when I was running 3-4 miles a day...now that I have dropped the majority of my cardio and focusing more on the weights I have seen steady progress. It was always a daily struggle to maintain my weight when cardio was my only real form of a workout...just my two cents:)

Good to bring that up KC....Forgot to address that point...your weight cannot fluctuate like that that quickly unless maybe you are massively overeating, then starving yourself to try to offset it. Even then, it would take a decent bit of time to show up. That is water weight, you cannot gain or lose 6 lbs. in a day.-------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

Exactly!
I was mostly Cardio too because of hip and back injury and once I set that to a slow and started hitting weights I acually gained 5 pounds BUT at the same time my fat% went lower and continues too, it's water weight that I gained and muscle memory. I love cardio but for over a year it was my main workout with weights being done on and off untill I just resently had my hip reset and the compression left my lower back. I will do cardio 1 too 2 days a week for now untill I feel the need to go a 3rd day and make weights my main focus 4 days a week! |

You are SO right and good! I used to do weight lifting at least 3 hours per week. I moved about 20 minutes farther from the gym and use those 3 hours+ to ride my bicycle. I just started weight lifting again. I'll let you all know the results.
Thanks, you've been SO helpful! |

Oh yeah, it's not fluctuating that much per day. :surprised: It's more every few weeks. I noticed it the most when I added cardio and reduced weight lifting. I think returning to my 3 hour+ weight lifting is the key. Thanks!!!!!
