Hi, I am doing squats, I think I am doing them properly, but I am not feeling it in my glutes, but in my thighs instead. Am I doing something wrong? I use a swiss ball on the wall, and go down to a sitting position with it. Any suggestions to tone up the butt area besides doing squats? Thanks

No squats focus on the quads or thighs. Lunges would hit the glutes a bit more direct.

Squat onto a box....really concentrate on lowering yourself with your hams....you'll feel it.

Also feet high on a leg press will hitt the glutes as well.

ok, thanks for the advice, will give it a try.

7707mutt, the spot that I really feel the burn in is in my leg right above my knee on the top of the leg. I thought that was my thigh, not sure now, but oh well, having a blonde moment. LOL. But I will try the lunges, have a bad knee, will that interfere with doing them??

I am not sure about the knee injury, try them. If you can do wall squats I feel you should be able to do lunges but if you feel any pain or discomfort stop!

ok, thanks. I heard on another website that squats are designed to work the quads. Is this wrong? Or am I working out both things at once?

Squats while targeting the quads work the entire body. You will and shoulde feel it all over. After a good leg day (last night for me ) I feel sore in my abs, quads, hamstrings glutes, tri, shoulders.

Yeah, I did my workout yesterday and now today I am sooo sore. I need to do cardio this am, but not sure if will cause sore. Course that's not an excuse. How do you keep up with doing cardio esp. when you are still sore?

Also if you adjust your stance in the squat to a wider one you may find it hitting the glutes and upper hams a bit more. I vary my stance once in a while and it amazes me every time.

usually wider means more hip involvement..

my problem with squats is balance. i have to put plates in the cage so i can stand my heels on them when i squat. otherwise, it's simply impossible for me to go down anywhere near to parallel to the ground without falling over.

Well then your problem isn't balance, its flexibility and technique.

Iron and chalk.

Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run.

ya, i'd say it's flexibility. i try very hard to use good form, but when i was a kid, i always walked on my toes (tons of ridiculing there). my parents (dad especially) thought it was something i did on purpose, but it's actually because my achilles tendon is super-taut. i still walk with my weight mostly on the balls on my feet, but it's not noticeably unless i'm barefoot and walking on a flat surface.

so ya, there's not much i can do there. putting my heels on plates works well enough though.
