I met with a personal trainer so that i could get my body fat measured and I have some questions. Apparently I weigh 208 lbs., and am 15% bodyfat. In order to get my midsection tight, I need to burn about 15 pounds (resulting in 7% bf).
Questions: 1. I was told I should have a cheat day once a week in order to prevent T3 levels decreasing (which slows the metabolism down) and to prevent Leptin levels decreasing (which slowing the metabolism even further). Is this right? Ive always heard or read that cutting should be strict with a cheat day maybe once every three-four weeks. Once a week? You agree? 2. I was told that i should drink at least a gallon of water a day, which is fine. but I was told to include a lot of lemon juice in it because lemon juice will cut the grease from food and make your skin tight when the fat goes away. Is this true? And if so, does it have to be from fresh lemons, or is bottled lemon juice OK? 3. I was told that the majority of my bf is in my midsection and legs, as my arms and chest are pretty tight. My fear is when burning the fat in pursuit of a flat stomach, I'll also end up with chopstick-thin legs. The trainer said I will be able add muscle to my legs if I go back to training them with weights while I burn fat. My question: is this possible? I always thought adding any muscle during a cut phase was impossible. I hope its possible cuz I don't want to look like a twig, I just wanna burn midsection fat. Thanks for all responses. |

1. Yes....ocassional MEAL or TWO a week are good....just don't go overboard
2. BS 3. You'll burn fat from everywhere....more from places where you're genetically predisposed to losing it from... Lift heavy while dieting....lift heavy with squats and deadlifts....the caloric restriction will take its toll on strength but that's OK.....caffeine+Aspirin should help with that a bit....giving you a bit of extra energy/boost....Fish Oil should help prevent most of the muscle loss from dieting....

1. So you're saying one cheat meal, not a whole cheat day.
2. I think the idea behind it is the vitamin C present in lemons. I did a search and came up with this: {Citrus fruits like, oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, and limes contain high concentrations of Vitamin C (this is also called ascorbic acid). This Vitamin C has a fat burning quality. Vitamin C reduces the effectiveness of fat. It reduces its content and can liquefy or dilute fat. By diluting the fat, it makes it less effective, and easier to flush out of your system. Vitamin C also works on cholesterol deposits. Vitamin C can help burn out the cholesterol, hence, making it difficult for cholesterol deposits to form in blood vessels. By adding Citrus Fruits to your daily diet, try every meal and also a snack, you will great increase your metabolism, increase your ability to get rid of fat, and also help you to control your cholesterol levels.} 3. Yeah, i just wanna lose the fat around my midsection, but of course no such thing as spot reduction, which means fat on my legs will go too. I haven't worked out my legs in months. Is there any way possible that I can add some muscle while burning the fat so that my legs won't look ridiculously thin? 4. He recommended flax oil. Fish oil better? |

Fish oil > flax oil IMHO.

take vitamin C then separately...if nothing else than at least placebo effect...never heard of those claims...any studies that back up those claims?
yes start training legs...no time like the present...you might make gains just because you haven't been training them..... Start Squatting, Deadlifting, Lunging... Fish OIl>FLax

Lemon in your water is an excellent thing to do. It will also prevent kidney stones for the most part. You will more than likely never get them.
As far as fat in your belly and thighs, this can indeed be true. My research shows that men who have "trouble" in their legs and abdomen with fat have a problem with estrogen. This is very common. I had this myself, getting my legs cut were hell! And fish oil is better! -------------- Strength and Honor! |

Ditto on the lemon juice..a nutrionist told me to drink lemon water,as it does a better job of flushing the kidneys than plain water..and to drink it eithe room temp or warmer

Just sqeeze 1/4 lemon in an 8 oz. glass for instance. Do this often as you can. I do it for instance every time I go out to eat, and a few times during the day. Been doing this for many years.-------------- Strength and Honor! |

A bit more on the original post. As far as T3 and leptin, this is a huge fact. A very low carb diet for instance will tends to supress T4->T3 conversion. High protein in and of itself does not suppress metabolic rate. -------------- Strength and Honor! |

So, should i bust my ass (no pun intended) working my legs to try and add muscle, even though Im in a cutting phase. I really don't wanna have pencil legs just because Im trying to flatten my midsection, yet I see no reason to go overboard with leg training if theres no chance of me gaining some muscle.

you'll still gain something....if u been neglecting your legs for a while then you'll still see good results....
