I am getting frustrated with this working out thing. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Lately I have been having a backslide and have gained back 2 pounds. I eat 6 times a day. I have upped my cardio to 30 minutes. I don't know if its because I do the same cardio all the time. I am thinking it could be because I do tend to sneak a couple of extra snacks in during the day but, I will eat my dinner and then directly after that I will eat my snack so that I am really full. I have a suspicion that doing these things are messing with my metabolism. I usually work out 4 times a week but, I do occasionally miss a Friday which I know is not good. Any input on what I might be causing this would be appreciated. Oh yeah, I am not near my goal weight either. I am 5'6" and weigh 174.

Thanks,
Melissa

First question....what are your extra snacks? all it takes is an extra 500 calories a day to equal 1 pound a week....What does your typical day look like? what are you eating in a day? What exercises are you doing?

lonegirl hit right on it. We all encourage multiple "small" meals. How close to your total caloric intake for an average day?

I will usually have Slim Fast snacks during the day. The problem is that when I get home I want my Baked Doritos and I know I eat more than the average serving size or I will eat one of those Blue Bunny Krunch Ice Cream bars sweetened with Splenda (they are like 90 calories). Sometimes I will double up on my Slim Fast snacks (which are 120 calories) which I know I shouldn't be doing. I will usually have a breakfast bar in the morning and some type of frozen dinner for lunch because it is convenient. I usually try to eat something that is healthy. I eat usually pasta or chicken with veggies and rice at night. I will also have typically 3 snacks a day but, again I have been overdoing it there. I normally have 1 diet soda in the morning and then the rest of the day I drink diet peach tea and water. I forgot to mention this but, I have been adding an extra soda the past few days too. I am wondering if that would be having a negative effect on my weight. I usually do the program I have on here but, I miss every other Friday...(I know....naughty!!). For cardio I like the eliptical and I will sometimes change it up and alternate with the rotating stair machine and the eliptical. I just started doing 30 minutes on the eliptical machines on a level 8. Maybe I need to up my level. I also think I may need to eat more protein. I am not sure how to do that without compromising my caloric intake.

It looks like you just did a pretty fair job of answering your own question. :) If you're prone to "cheating" you need to have a more definite idea of calories eaten and expended. Those cheat snacks occassionally do no harm but if it's a daily occurance (or several times a day), that's going to be a big negative. It doesn't look like you're doing any resistance training and if it's available, I'd highly recommend you start. You'll do yourself a favor calculating calories then adjust your protein upwards and fats and carbs downward. I don't count calories but you need to get a better handle on what you're accumulating.

Okay when you say resistance training do you mean weights? I do weight training. Just wanted a little clarification on what you meant by that. Thanks.

Missy

I would honestly suggest that you use the Nutrional plan that was devised for you when you started on this site.Input EVERYTHING you eat...it will track your calories, protein fats and carbs...

Its very easy to backslide on a diet, simply because we reach a point where we start to feel good, look good and think "oh one little treat wont hurt" trouble is,that ONE turns to 2 etc and before you know it,we are back at stage one.

I find keeping track of what I eat keeps me clean and honest.Eat properly the whole week, exercise and plan for one day of cheating...if yu have that cheat day to look foward,it will help to keep you focused and motivated the rest of the time.

Diet foods like SLim fast bars and low fat ice cream bars are loaded with other crap that can pack on the lbs..check out how much sugar each of them has,and for any hidden fats..I laugh when I see a low fat chocolate bar..yea right..there aint no such thing

You truly will become "what you eat" if you eat all the wrong things

Good luck

Try eating more whole foods, snack on things like carrots and veggies. Yes pop can be a big downfall of many diets.... one extra a day any where from 140-200 extra calories in a 12 oz serving....I don't want to think how much those big gulps have...and all just sugar with no nutritional goodness at all. What sort of weight training are you doing? Start your day off with a healthy breakfast...not a bar...a good ommelett with some berries or a piece of whole grain bread or some oatmeal will keep you going a lot longer....Don't miss your workouts...schedule rest days but don't skip scheduled days...

Okay a couple of things I have to say... I don't need to hear about the evils of Slim Fast. It works for me so, do what works for you. Second I never said anything about regular soda I am fully aware of how bad it is for you I was talking about DIET soda. Anyhow I have a handle on my eating again and I am actually down to 170 now. I think I kinda knew what I was doing wrong just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

 Am I the only one in the twilight zone here? I am just poking fun at the 1st note vs the last.. going from having no idea what was going on at all, to knowing what the problem was all along 3 days later.

Anyway.. Missy, sounds like in your mind you are back on track. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I think generally folks here were saying try to eat healthy foods and watch your overall calorie intake - which Mike pointed out you seemed to answer and figure out yourself. BTW, I'm sure Slim Fast isn't going to kill anyone, I think folks here were just saying if it's available it is better to eat healthy foods than 'health shakes' etc. All just general good advice. Keep us up to date on how your doing.

Bottom line...the main reason things like Slim Fast are bashed is the nutritional value is suspect as compared to other sources. It is relatively high in sugar.

That being said, you can have a McDonalds cheeseburger daily if all else is in place, i.e....calories do not outnumber your energy output. You will still lose fat.

One caveat is going too low on calories, this normally ocurrs when folks get impatient, or simply do not know what they are doing. This will mess with metabolism, thyroid output, and mess with hormones in general that will sabotoge your weight loss.

Big E

I just wanted to point out to you that it doesn't seem like you read what I posted previously at all. I didn't say I did strictly a Slim Fast diet. I use Slim Fast mainly for some of my snacks I don't even touch the "shakes" as you call them. I actually eat pretty healthy. The reason I posted in the first place was to get some input on what I thought I was doing wrong. If you read the posts you would see that I had several theories as to what I was doing wrong. It was simply a case of narrowing it down to the exact culprit. I didn't cut any calories, I simply went back to eating the way that I did before I kept gaining the weight. Come to find out through trial and error that eating a bunch of food all at once WILL make you gain weight.

? Who said you strictly had a slim fast diet? Not I! I said if you had slim fast or a healthy food to choose from I think it was being communicated here that the healthy food would be better than slim fast.. give it as a snack or meal replacement. Take care, the important part is that you sat back and thought about your situation and you have now corrected it for the better. We are all fighting for a healther self and with some help from here we are all going to make it!
