So let's say I buy into the fact that I need to eat five or six small meals a day instead of two or three big meals...and I even go as far to schedule my meals at the following times: 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. If I only chose from the following foods, which food should go with what time to best utilize their benefits and limit their negatives?

oatmeal, granola bars, bananas, apples, oranges, fat-free pringles, reduced fat triscuit crackers, nutri-grain bars, rice crackers, bagels, popcorn, protein drink/meal replacement shake, celery, baby carrots, saltine crackers, almonds, cream of wheat.

Also, does anyone have any better ideas on how to do this?

And, if this has been posted elsewhere, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks a lot!!

Congrats on your weight loss first of all. When I first came to work here the running joke was that I constantly had food on my desk. Not entirely true but close. It's not as hard as you think once you get used to doing it. Today is pretty typical for me. I make a big pot of beans with veggies and lean meat on the weekend then put that in one quart containers in the freezer. I drink my oatmeal and protein shake just before heading out for work at 5:30. By 8:00 I'm hungry and will have an orange and handful of nuts. A couple hours later, I'll heat up the beans and have a little of that with some celery and other raw vegetables. Same goes a couple of hours later. By the time I get home at 5:00 PM I'll have a protein only shake and work out. Dinner tonight is Tuna on the grill and sliced tomato and/or a litlle bit of sweet potato. I'll snack on a small amount of nuts a couple of hours after that then have a small bit of cottage cheese before bed. No chips, crackers, bread or literally anything that comes out of a box.

Mark, please tell me that the protien drink is not your only source of protien in the day! I 100% agree with Mike when he says it is relatively easy to eat 6 meals/ day. I typically eat 3 larger meals plus 3 snacks all of which include protien/carbs and healthy fats. I suggest you have a look at the grocery list for healthy eating thumbtacked at the top of the nutrition forum and chose your daily foods from this list. Based on the food list you have, the only things I'd keep are the fruit, veggies and oatmeal and I'd take the protien shake after a workout.

No, the protein drink isn't my only source of protein, just the main one. I still eat a "normal" meal in the evenings, and my food list is just the stuff I take to work on a regular basis for snacking.

Also, Mike, could you go into the recipe for the bean and veggie and meat deal that you make? That sounds like something that I could do for myself, but I am pathetically bad at actually preparing meals.

Thank you both for your input.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Sure Mark - I keep it simple but literally keep just about every bean that Wally World sells on hand and dump some of each in a pot to soak over night. Everything from navy beans, black eyed peas, a small amount of black beans, kidney beans, lima beans -- you get the idea. It only takes a couple of hours on simmer and they're done. About half way through the cooking time, I dump in a bunch of pre peeled carrots (I'm lasy in the kitchen) and a bunch of celery. It looks like you like starchy foods so a tater or two can go in also. The only spice is use is pepper, cayenne pepper, jalapeno's (sliced) and a little hot sauce. You can probably tell that I like spicey. :) For the meat, chicken breast is surprisingly good but anything else works. Whatever meat you're using should be added at the start.

Kind of coincidental, but I basically had that for lunch today, although mine was more of a chili. I also make a big batch at the beginning of the week and I use a crock pot to throw in a can of chili style stewed tomatoes (or regular stewed tomatoes), can of black beans(rinsed!!), can of chick peas, meat(cooked chicken or xtra lean beef) celery, corn, chili powder and hot sauce. You can use other beans, these are just my preferences! The nice thing about the crock pot is you can just let it cook all day, but because everything is already cooked and your just trying to heat and "meld" the flavors, a couple of hours simmering is fine to. Yummy!!

Well lets just say you schedule your first meal at 9, and your last meal at 5. Thats 16 hours without feeding.
You should stretch them out a little more and have you last meal a little later.
Your body typically handles carbohydrates better earlier in the day. Follow this guideline, and you will know when to eat what. Try for a meal with strictly protein and fat right before bed.

Thank you everybody, the fitBuddy works great. I had the exact same question that mark had. This information really helps a lot, thanks:)
