My feet fall asleep while I'm on the eliptical machine!

Why? Usually I can only do about 20 minutes before they fall asleep, which is pretty annoying. I'd like to do more, but it gets really uncomfortable, and the last time I stepped off I nearly toppled over! Not so cool.

Does this happen to anyone else?

It doesn't happen if I walk on a treadmill, but will occasionally happen on a bike as well.

What gives??

A co-worker and myself were looking at these as well, then another co-worker (very in shape and aware of health) said to be careful as they are very hard on the hips. She said that she and others she knows cannot use it, she has no problem on a treadmill or bike. Is this common with elliptical machines?

I have never heard of the problem mentioned by Vikarious before. With a stationary bike I can see how maybe the pedals are too far away or if the seat is wide it might cut off blood circulation if it squeezes those major arteries on the inside of your thighs. You might want to ask a doctor about this, I am interested to see what others reply.

I have this problem as well, but it also happens to me when I run and cycle. I think my problem is a high instep and kind of lousy circulation as well. I have tried many shoes and although it did help a bit, my feet still get a bit numb, I'm just used to it now. As far as ellip. being bad for the hips, I actually found the opposite, but I think it depends on the ellip machine. My hips got pretty messed up from running and training for a 1/2 marathon and I found that the ellip gave me some relief by loosening them up a bit. The only ellip I'm comfortable on is the Reebok (not sure of the model but it's one found in the gyms). I think it is more related to your physique/gate than the equipment, you just have to find what works best for you.

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

Sorry, I meant to add that it did help me to tie my shoes differently. I do not put the laces in the lowest holes (closest to toes) and make sure I lace up to the highest hole. For me it works because I have a wide toe block and a narrow heal.

So as lonegirl suggests...check your shoes first.

Quoting from lonegirl:

It's been a problem for a few years, and I've definitely changed shoes so that might not be the problem.
It's more of a whole leg problem than just a foot issue, I think, but I can try loosening my shoes up a bit.

Any one else experience this?
