Okay - well here i go ranting - feel free to join me!
First off - people! Do a little work - check the search engine at the bottom of the page for posts about your question's topic before asking a question that has been asked many many times!
Second - welcome to all of the newcomers and to the come-backers and a shout out o the people who have been here all along!I was commenting to someone about traveling and eating and all that stuff, and it occurred to me that I should just put it here and be done with it. Looking back I really was having a soapbox moment! Believe it or not, I did used to have a really tight schedule for training clients at the club and speaking engagements and dropping off/picking up my daughter. All that and I was preparing for a bodybuilding show.
Here is my must-have automobile/gym bag list for people with tight schedules, so you don't have any excuses to go through the drive through!
A cooler and a blue ice pack thingy. Your cooler is your best friend. It holds the key to having healthy meals, no matter where you are. A healthy chicken salad, cut up vegetables, ice cold protein shakes...Where the mind goes, the body follows.
A gallon jug of water - keep it fresh, or stop at the convenience store and buy a new one when you need it, but having that water is indispensable. You can make shakes in the car, you can stave off the soda cravings, you can take your vitamins that your forgot to take at home...
Dental floss - I like the ones that are little pre-threaded pics. All those veggies can get stuck in your teeth, not good on the way to a meeting or speaking engagement. I also have a travel toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste in my gym bag - if you get there early you can freshen up.
Sugar-free minty gum , or just mints if you don't chew. In a pinch you can freshen your breath while you drive.
I keep some jerky in the glove compartment, as well as an extra Meal Replacement bar or shake. That is for when the whole world has collapsed on you and you somehow forgot or didn't pack you cooler, or just out of sheer rebellion didn't want to (Mickey D's is calling). Eat a bar or drink a shake, if in 20-30 minutes you still hear the siren call of junk food, maybe it is time for a rare treat, have a kid's size burger, or a small fries. Or what I used to do was order an Arby's Big Montana and just eat the meat with horsey sauce. 55g of fat, baby! But I was burning it all off back then. I don't advocate that if you care about your arteries, I am curious how mine look inside
And here is the promised rant that I commented to this person:
Knowing what to do is easy, the hard part is applying it! I know exactly what you mean - I have a degree in health science and I am a certified personal trainer.
It is hard sometimes to figure out why we let ourselves off the hook - I was there, I had achieved the look, I had plans to get even more muscular and compete again. And then I stopped listening to myself. I stopped doing all of the things I tell my clients to do...
I almost think it is a sort of rebellion, or self-loathing. It is definitely disrepectful to ourselves.
Make yourself a top priority. Without your health, you can't help your daughter, you can't be there for your wife, and you can't perform up to par at work. If you can't convince yourself that you are worth the effort, at least realize that they are worth the effort .
Sorry about the soapbox moment, I should probably paste this into my journal, it seems to apply more to me than anything...
My favorite ways to beat the traveling food problem -
Apples (numero uno portable good carbs!)
Turkey jerky (salty, yes, but you will drink more water)
Meal Replacement shakes in pre-measured pouches (like Labrada or Prolab, both have good flavors and protein:carb ratios), bring a shaker and a gallon jug of water in the car. (or buy a big container of protein and pre-measure into a shaker)
Tri-o-plex bars - a meal replacement bar made with oats and protein - filling, tasty and satisfying.
Those new pouches of tuna are a godsend! Just remember a fork!
A cooler in the car can save your life! I pack cut-up veggies, hard-boiled eggs, cut up chicken in vinagrette, salad greens (keep the dressing seperate until time to eat or it will be slimy, yechh, you name it, a healthy meal can be had!
As I have said before - it is all about the pre-planning and preparation!
Here is my first rant:

AWESOME, as per usual, and it is nice that you are honest and letting us know that you, too, struggle with your own demons from time to time, you always keep it real, thank you and I hope 2006 brings you happiness and success!
