I know they say do stuff like higher reps if you usually do low reps but do you just do this for say a week or so then go back to your higher reps? Because I don't imagine you would put on a lot of muscle using a high rep scheme...
Also, I am taking a week or two off weight lifting, what can and should I do to be able to go back to hitting the weights hard and get over my recent plateau?

You may not even do it for a week, but maybe one workout. A shock is just that, something totally different to "wake" the muscle up so to speak. It can be many forms, a massive drop set, many supersets, rest/pause, etc. Something completely out of the ordinary that is literally massive trauma to the muscle.

I think that I am still slightly confused. Once I shock the muscle do I go back to the low rep range to build up the muscle and strength etc? I know they say everytime you workout you should be changing something, i.e. rap range, speed of reps, rest between sets etc. but I don't know how to work this into my program so I am shocking the muscles as much as possible without overtraining...
