I'm sure its much better than say, smoking and not working out right? How about just give him the facts, which are smoking is horrible for your body instead of telling a person they are disgusting. Smoking is a serious addiction, which I had to over come myself, and it was easy. What usually happens is the person starts working out, then slowly realizes how much healthier they could be by quiting. I think a person who works out has a much higher chance of quiting than a person who does not.

I'm having a hard time understanding how you can do something so good for your body (working out), and then do something so bad for your body like smoking. Yuck! Listen, there is nothing good about smoking. It harms your body. Every part of it.

It decreases your circulation by constricting your blood vessels thus inhibiting nutrient rich blood from reaching your muscles. also carbon dioxide competes with oxygen for space on hemeglobin. Smokers have less oxygen and more carbon dioxide traveling in their blood than a non-smoker.

By training it sounds like you are interested in taking better care of yourself. Now that you have the facts why not try to quit so your body can truly benefit from all the hard your doing in the gym. I suggest 3 days (one day at a time) of not smoking and you can kick the habit, for good,(21 days to create a new habit). Breathing and recovery will be amazing and darling you will not only look marvelous, you'll feel marvelous.

Besides that its just plain disgusting (my opinion), smoking is very demanding on various parts of your body. Your immune system plays a particularly important roll in your workout recovery. If you're stressing the body more by putting toxic substances in it, your body will focus on removing the toxins before it worries about what workout you just did. The increases your recovery time and can ultimately hamper your progress in the gym.
