I've been clean now for a little over two months, I used the patch for about 3 weeks. I think the gum can help as well. Whatever makes it easier for you, I say go for it. Here is a link to dnload a fun program for your computer. You can input the number of cigareets you smoke a day and the cost of a pack and it will tally up how many days you've quit and the amount of money saved etc... Here is what mine says right now:
I have chosen not to smoke for 2 Months 3 Days 13 Hours 46 Minutes 45 Seconds. Cigarettes not smoked: 1967. Money saved: $304.92.

It's been about 6 months for me since I stopped. I started off with the patch (step 3) for 2 weeks. Then from there, I just stopped. The patch helped alot, but to seriously quit, it's all about determination. I didn't want to quit because I enjoyed it so much but I had my mind set on this one goal that absolutely motivated me to stop. Good luck to ya.

I'm going on day 5 as we speak. This site added alot of help in making the right decision. I am on the patch and it does pretty good. Remeber to keep your self busy, then you will have less time to worry about smoking. If you can't smoke at work see if you can get some over-time.

agesis hit the nail on the head. A goal will be the best motivation to stop. When I quit, over 18 years ago, there was no patches or pills. But, I started a gym routine, wanted to get healthy and strong, and realized that smoking would not aid me in any way. So, shear determination is what got me through, keeping a goal in front of me at all time. I was smoking 2 packs a day at the time too. Desire and willpower are your best freinds. Ageis and LaXor, congrats to you both. It may be the hardest thing you ever did in your life, but the best!

I chewed plain gum... like juicy fruit to keep my self from snacking when I had a craving. I think that was good for me because then I didn't draw out my nicotine dependancy any longer.. (I also only smoked like 2-3 cigs a day so I really didn't have a huge hurdle to over come) best of luck ...

Good luck to you! I quit about ten years ago. I found that even though I sometimes cheated and had a cigarette, I would not give up at that point, I would just try and try again - I would just keep at it. Hard to do at first but it did definetly get easier!
I think being stubborn sometimes helps!

I am in my 13th year of not smoking. The best thing to help you out is what was previously said. If you can use an aid, do it, if not go cold turkey. Just set a goal , such as a cut off date and then reward yourself with something.
Here in Montreal Cigarettes cost $8.00 a pkg. when I quit they were 3.25. Thats for 25 in a pack. Anyway, you will reap the benefits all around. You are not only doing it for yourself, but also for your family. Oh ya, when you do quit, and you are offered a cigarette, don't say "no thanks I quit" say "No thanks, I don't smoke" Good Luck

5 years for me and believe me, I LOVED to smoke!!! I took the Zyban at the beginning, then went cold turkey. Good Luck to the people trying to quit; it was the hardest thing I ever did; even harder than childbirth! Still to this day, I may have a craving for one, but it goes away in no time.

I tried it all. The patch made me really sick, the gum and pills didn't help so it's been cold turkey for me. I hope whatever you try does work for you. good luck.

============
Quoting from mrmagical:

Keep at it. I quit lots of times before I finally made it and that was 29 years ago. Started when I was in the 4th grade. Quit drinking coffee too, cause they always seem to go together. Though I've since resumed the coffee (one cup a day) Smoking was one of the most pleasurable things I've done, but it was also the dumbest.
