As I may have already said..I am not finacially able to joina gym. I have bought a couple of small home things...And I can run, etc.I do plan to buy a bike and a jump rope.
What I am wondering is have any of you had long term success without a gym? I can save a little along and add more weights or dvd's..etc..just slowly. I cannot do a monthly membership and I enjoy doing it on my own more I think...at least not with people I don't know!:)
Anyway..I ramble on....
If you have had success what routine were you following? DId you in the end have to joina gym to further yourself..

I too am financialy unable to go to a gymn, but becuz of childcare costs, not gym membership cost. I cannot answer the question as to how far you can go in your training.
I can say tho that I have spent a great deal buying "a little along the way" . $14.99 per tae bo dvd (all of which eventually stopped challenging me), $20 balance ball, $400.00 weight bench. And even if you purchase the extras at a place like walmart, you're paying roughly $5-25 per plate.

Now I am still saving money, as daycare costs $300.00 a WEEK per kid, and in-home care is hard to find right now. But with what I have spent on excersise equipment I could have an annual gym membership for 2...

And to me there is safety. I went from working out in the gym to working out at home and I am now always working out slightly under my potential for fear of hurting myself. I didn't like working out with a bunch of sweaty marines at the gym becuz I felt inferrior, but I did like the aspect of trainers being there to correct my form and advise me.

Like you tho, I am hoping to go a long way at home, becuz I'm stuck with it for awhile. Goodluck.

randomgirl, if you feel intimidated by the gym environment, perhaps joining a womens gym would be a better option for you. I know my mom is in the same situation, but she belongs to Curves, and loves the atmosphere there. You can get the training and advice you need from the professionals there too..

There are many home workouts one can do and have success. It also depends on your long term goals. Actually why don't you try the one from here on Freetrainers.

some of the keys to sticking to exercise is making it fun, challenging, as well as constantly reminding yourself of why you're doing it and revaluating whether your actions are congruent with your goals/thoughts.....

For example I know I can stick with my cardio because I like playing basketball and it's a great form of cardiovascular exercise....

I know I can stick with my weight lifting exercise because I constantly motivate myself by trying to progress in all my lifts with respect to poundage, reps, amount of rest, speed, etc....I know as longas I challenge myself I can stay motivated

Also I know that exercise is very good for health as well as helping me function better in life....I also know that exercise helps in other things like how people perceive me......

Great thing about thoughts/actions....is that if you say one thing and do another or contradict yourself....your brain experiences cognitive dissonance...
here's an article explaining it...
http://www.dmu.ac.uk/~jamesa/learning/dissonance.htm

So that signing a contract with yourself is a great use of this phenomenon.....if you claim one thing and do another....you'll feel very bad....maybe humiliated....etc...so that taking your words back will make you look like a lier and feel very embarassed ...almost like a failure...so that you'll be forced to follow through with your promise....so that a contract with yourself especially in front of other people like your family and friends is a great mechanism for forcing yourself to stick with exercise......

oops...I think I might have misread this post initially...thinking it was how to stick with exercise....

but some of the ideas...can still be applied....

you can still do many things at home especially cardio related.....plenty of playgrounds around....jump rope, run, etc....

invest in a set of barbell and weights, adjustable bench, and adjustable DBs.....if you got money....buy a cage....so that you can do almost any exercise....squats, deadlifts, pull ups, bench, etc.....no real limitation.....cages are expensive but the rest of the stuff you can get pretty cheap especially used....you can also buy bands and train using them....they are very helpful.....

not belonging to a gym is no excuse for abandoning fitness....there are plenty of things you can do at home...

Are there no community centres where you live? I know that most cities have them and you can use the gyms there for a very low fee...If not Investing in a few sets of bands (varying in tension) a stability ball and some dumbells...as well as doing research online for good workouts with these equipment...there are books too but they are not free. :)
Just one comment randomgirl: OMG in regards to child care prices...lol It certainly does encourage one to be a stay at home parent...I know my sister-in law is grateful for my mum and her mum....free babysitters :)

I dont go to the gym and I been at it for about a year now. Just get the barbells, bench press(pref one with squat rack). Make sure not to have any accidents training though. The hardest part is diet, Id be twice as big now with the right diet..lol.

Cardio and bodyweight execises should be very easy to do, infact I much prefer doing them on my own. Although going for a run with someone at the park isnt too bad.
