Ok i just needa clearly clarify these differences in how people train/workout correct me if im wrong im pritty slow but yeah anyway...
Strength training or powerlifting is where your doing routines with less intensity by which i mean more Break time between sets?? for example when training your body for strength you would b doing exercises like deads bench and squats or speed benching n stuff and u DONT TRAIN to failure... but if your doing a body building workout u would be more or less doing more intensity such as supersets or less time between break in sets or heavy negatives and training more to failure or even having static hold training to have muscle growth.. also strnegth isnt about building muscle rather strength within the existing muscle is this answer rite??? cuz i have had alota routines now that i think of it that tie in between the 2 strength and body building training ... would i benefit more if i was to just stick with the one for a while? or recover better?

the umltimate goal of powerlifting is the 1 repmax. I would say that powerlifters train with less intensity is false. Breaks between sets has nothing to do with intesity of training. Also we work with greater weight than most bodybuilders. The full blown power meets is based on the 3 lifts the dead squat and bench. The body builders aim is hypertropy and perfect symetry of each muscle. There is allot of body builders that will grey the lines. They will use a power work out during a mass gaining phase. They will then use the supersets and failures and what not to sculpt the new mass. Know it is for you to decide are you a self proclaimed powerlifter or bodybuilder it all depends on your goals. Joe ladnier goes both ways and does quite well in both arenas. hope it helped - mike

Somtimes I stick an extra plate on each side of the bar, to make it to heavey to press but I just lift it out of the holders and hold it up for as long as I can. I beleive this might help in the shoulder department and ultimately help my bench. Does any one agree or am I waisting my time?.

excelent! my bench has always been prety low compard to some people I know but my chest seems better built than some of my freinds and they are srprised that I cant press as much as them. I put it down to luck as the oposite is true for my arms. Thanks mmaibo.

First off Powerlifters train differently from bodybuilders....powerlifters lift in the 1-5 range...all of which are maxes in those ranges for working sets...(ie all except warm up sets)....point of powerlifters is to recruit most muscles in one shot ...so powerlifters do train with extreme intensity....

bodybuilders however exhaust their muscles in progression using higher volume and higher reps of 6-8......these are also maxes with a weight using those reps...bodybuilders train with intensity...but it's usually to fight for that 8th rep...

Powerlifters rest longer because they train more intensely for that short burst....

For example...my back workout is more powerlifting than bodybuilding but I do combine bodybuilding conceps

last workout I did 6 total working sets for back in 2 hours...I rest on average 20 minutes...up to 30 between deadlifts...

I did

Deadlifts(12*,2!,2)
!=i did a lower back machine for 20 + 0 reps as a superset
T-Rows((1+1,4),(6,3))
One arm pulldowns(4,2)

This is not a necessarily powerlifting workout...I basically use bodybuilding exercises...at very low rep ranges and use body building techniques.....so I try to blend them for maximum effectiveness for me....

I also train my back every 14-21 days...20 days between last workout and the one before...

I do drop sets to push myself more...

You can successfully combine powerlfiting elements into bodybuilding lifestyle if you just maintain your caloric intake...key is to rest longer and spread your workouts farther apart....hope this helps...

err let me clarify....powerlifters recruit the most and largest muscle fibers as a result of trying to lift the msot weight they can in 3 lifts....which are all compound exercises and thus generally recruit a lot of muscle fibers....powerlifters do train the whole body but the other muscles are trained as a secondary goal...they are the auxillary muscles which help throughout the lifts but are not directly measured in powerlifting contests...

bodybuilders aim as mmaibohm stated to build big, proportionate, symmetrical, viscular body...not to lift msot weights...weight lifted and muscle size somewhat different

Bodybuilders also aim to have veyr low body fat to show off the muscles(often below 5% at contest), while most powerlifter maintain fairly high body fat...often being over 20...

Bodybuilders do at times train similarly to powerlifters especially during the offseason for bodybuilders in that they go heavier ...dipping to reps of as low as 4 or even lower like ronnie coleman doing doubles/singles...when they let their body fat levels rise...and they gain up to 80 or more pounds...during their mass gain cycles...ofcourse powerlifters use different exercises to train for the lifts that bodybuilders don't....like board bench, floor presses, etc..

most the bodybuilding workouts i have seen show the reps stay over 8. My very 1st workout I got was HHH's workout......and he said he didn't go under 8, cause anything under 8 your form breaks down and you don't get the sueeze or good form of the weight. And I have seen most probodybuilders do reps as high as 20 sometimes 30. Muscle tension is the key.

but for the average joy bodybuilder 6-12 I think is recomended.

When you say muscle tension then keeping static on an exercise eg holding 2 dumbells up on bench press just b4 lockout on chest for as long as possible is more of a body building thing right??? i was thinking of all this last nite got me thinking between the two there is actually heaps more differences then i thought, sorry about above didnt mean to say powerlifters dont train intensify just meant they have longer rest periods for CNS right?? anyway so basically point comes down to bodybuilding routine would make you look all big and muscley but not overly strong and strength routines can make you strong without being overly too big?? and im asumming also most powerlifters only get as big as they r cuz they dun cut down at all and eat all crap alot of time, would cardio be better if i was doing a powerlifting /strength routine or body building also which cardio for which? if training for strength id assume HIIT would be better ( or all around better losing fat too ) but normal long distance running where does that come under if anything? thanks all

Hit is good for both. Long distance running isnt a good idea when trying to build muscle.

ok so long distance running is better with strength training? i kno over all long distance is bad but it is better with strength gains? as ur not gaining mass size? rather just strength? or i dno.. but some times i like long distance running as an alternative cuz overtime ill prob get use to hiit and i also like the fact where u just run and job for miles on end... not that i do it much.. lol

ok what I meant to say is long distance is bad for both. the point of a good hit workout is so that you body doesnt get used to it.

I just rid and article that interval trainng is better than long distance for muscle mass and gains. Now i'm not saying that it burns more calories but it spares muslce mass more so.

The article said running in intervals, is like working out short bursts.....with rest...burst with rest. Kinda like working out.....10 reps: rest min, 10 reps: rest min.

and what imeant by tension is.......powerlifting is fast as possible. 1 sec at most on the "up part"....say on bench.......now a body builder may wanna take 2 maybe 3 secs......someimtes 4 to really "feel " the chest muscles and really concentrate on using them. Saem for the negative portion.

so your saying body building uses more "tempo" to stimulate more muscle thus building more muscle and not strength, also something i confused with is would it be better to just stick with ONE type of routine where it just does body building or strength gains? then switch up as id make better gains? like ( bulking and cutting phases?? ) yeah i heard that bout interval training alot oh well if people think im wierd from sprinting then walking then i dun care lol thnx there
2005/03/12, 11:51 PM
powerlifters don't eat crap timmstar I hope you didn't misudnerstand me....they eat healthy food they jsut eat A LOT of it.......If i was a powerlifter I would focus on gaining as much mass as possible...to have the bulk to push the weight.....they are concerned to be aat the max of their weight class....

You can train like a powerlifter and just maintain your caloric intake and make good power gains and look like a bodybuilder....because you're likely to cut down on your body fat with this intense lifting....this is what i am trying to do...

I would stick with one type of routine, either bodybuilding or powerlifting. I do strictly powerlifting, so I dont know all that much about bodybuilding, though i have learned alot. I guess you could periodize, but i would use conjugated periodization, ie, training all parts of strecgth simultaneously, other wise, your detraining while you switch routines. But Im sure it would work

"...and im asumming also most powerlifters only get as big as they r cuz they dun cut down at all and eat all crap alot of time..." That's what you said.

Two of the biggest fallacies associated with powerlifting are that we eat horribly, and that we have no form and just throw weight around.
As powerlifters, we do eat alot, yes. But it cant just be junk calories. First, we eat more carbs than most because carbs fuel muscles, and we need that in order to move the big pounds. But they cannot be alot of sugary carbs - these tend to cause a crash, and that's something we can't afford during training. We also consume more fats than most people because we need to be able to sustain the level of intensity (yes, I said intensity!) that we train and live with; and they have to be good fats, otherwise, we're just defeating ourselves. And, proteins. We take a ton of these in too because they help not only with tissue repair, but also because they help with so many other of our body's operations.

Now, on to form. I have said before a million times: a powerlifter's lifting form is as tight and as rehearsed as a bodybuilder's posing routine. It must be. If it isn't, he is A: not going to be using all of his muscles that are necessary and in the most effective matter that is needed in order to lift the weight. B: That lifter is going to hurt himself big time, and maybe someone else.
