I have the hardest time ever getting out of bed in the morning. Once I get up I have no problem staying up, and am rarely tired. Even around bed time I have to make myself go to bed because I know I need the sleep. I average between 6-9 hours of sleep per night (depending on tests and assignements due). I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to make it easier to wake up? Could it be my diet or how hard I work myself during the day that affects this?

Some people claim to not be morning people, but I think that I take it to an extreme. It is getting to the point that I have been late to work a few times and have missed a few classes because it is so hard to get up.

Sorry ecle ~ I'm the opposite. I can't wait to get to bed at night ... and morning can't come soon enough! It's probably your age. I have a son that would sleep til noon if I let him! Do you try to maintain any sort of consistency with when you sleep and when you wake? I know that's hard in college...

Hi ecle5c, I am in the same boat and I am 43! My three boys are identical to this behavior even though I was and still am very particular about getting them to bed at decent hours and on a strict routine, they would much better sleep a bit later and stay up half the night. I've tried everything for myself and nothing works, I still drag every morning, although I just read for my age I should be getting more like 12 hours sleep, though I couldn't begin to imagine sleeping that long!

I would have your kids drink some warm milk before bed and maybe a aspirin or two,try to change there sleeping patterns if at all possible.

try taking magnesium, zinc and melatonin for improved sleep as well as easier time falling asleep...

I take 3mg og melatonin 30-45min before sleep and it gets me very tired....(sleepy)...

magnesium and zinc make me sleep like a baby.....I wake up after 4-6 hours sometimes completely refreshed...try taking them either individually or as a ZMA supplement all in one...

I hate getting up early also...I can sleep 15 hours at times....I love going to bed very late....3-5am...and sleeping to 3pm the next day...but my schedule is very weird......

I know exactly what you mean ecle5c. I can never fall asleep at night no matter what. If I pulled an all nighter, I still would not be able to just "fall asleep on queue".

Its probably our age. Keeping a stricter schedule might help, but even that has its limits, and is sometimes impossible to do. Frankly I like the idea of sleeping when I feel tired (and waking up naturally) and eating when I'm hungry (and eating until I'm satisfied).

If you are in desperate need of some sleep I would recommend Ambien. You are pretty much guarenteed a good 8 hours of sleep if you take one. Sometimes I think that its not as good as sleeping naturally, but 8 hours of drug induced sleep will come in handy if you have a tough day ahead of you.

I feel your pain man, one day we will be able to fall asleep and get up easier though.

I think it's laziness. I have it too. I just don't want to get up. I wake up at 6 and its like I want to stay in the bed even if I am awake. I just want to lay there and enjoy not doing anything or something. I am much better in the morning though once I am out of the bed. I work better and I feel calmer and at peace. Later in the day I feel like I'm too busy and stressed. I say just make yourself jump out of the bed the first time the alarm rings and hit the shower. You might be surprised at how this helps.

ecle5c - I'm with you. But my problem (like bobosensi) is that I HATE getting out of bed! Once I'm actually up I'm good to go.
Here's my secret: My alarm is on the dresser on the opposite side of my room. I HAVE to get out of bed to shut the horrid thing off (no going easy on yourself by using the music option).
Before bed I put my gym clothes in the bathroom (get dressed there so I don't disturb hubby), my gym bag by the front door and my food in the fridge ready to go. The more prep you do the night before the easier it is to just get moving.

Give it a try - it worked for me and a number of my friends.

I tried that today and almost threw my alarm clock out the window. I put it at full volume on the annoying alarm. But it got me out of bed alright, all be it pretty crabby. The only downside is that both of my roommates also got out of bed when it went off (haha). they were a little crabbier than I was but I laughed pretty hard at it since neither of them have class until noon when they got up at 7.

Hey - if some of us have to suffer the pains of pertending to be morning people we should definitely drag those closes to us down too!

I love it. I've acutally smashed a couple alarm clocks but it does work.

Keep it up, ecle5c! You made my day reading that!
