I have large amounts of trouble meeting my protein goals due to not eating meat. I'm not vegan, butmost dairy products are high in fat. What would be the best way to consume large amounts of protein in a day (shakes are a good idea, but 3 or 4 a day?)

any help is appreciated.

There are lots of lowfat and no fat dairy products!

There is reduced fat tofu, edamame beans, legumes.... so many meat substitutes like boca burgers, morningstar farms crumbles - come in italian suasage flavor, really good in omelets. There is fake beef, fake chicken, fake duck, you name it - lots of ways to get protein.

Don't be too fat-phobic, you need fat in your diet.

Good answer Asimmer....and to add something else about vegetarians you may be unaware of is relying on plant foods containing beta-carotene as your sole source of vitamin A is not a wise choice, and vitamin A deficiency is a major concern for people who choose to have a strictly vegetarian diet. Beta-carotene is the metabolic precursor of vitamin A, which means that it must be converted into vitamin A in the body. However, it takes bile salts, thyroid hormone and dietary fat to facilitate this conversion, and even then the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A is poor (it takes about six units of beta-carotene to make one unit of vitamin A). I wold suggest looking inot some cod liver oil for example.

Just a quick tip to add. Its really important to eat iron rich foods such as spinach, macadamia nuts (all though a little fattening) if your going to cut meat from your diet. Taking a good multi vitamin would also be a good idea.

What about grains? In the natural section of my supermarket I have found pastas made from 'ancient' grains.

Quinoa is a powerhouse of nutrition favored by the Incas. It can be turned into a tabbouleh or a high-protein breakfast cereal. I find this easier to cook as boxed mix. My family loves it! :-)

Amaranth was the Aztec's choice for flour, cereal or crackers. It boasts a protein content that exceeds ordinary wheat.

Spelt was a staple of every Gladiator's diet, again having more protein than regular wheat.

I prefer them as a pasta. Luckily, my grocery store's natural foods section carries them. All it takes is a request to the store's manager in most cases for them to carry it.

Just a thought.

In this months Fitness RX magazine they have an interview with the cover model, champ of something fitness wise(forget his name). He is a veggie (so am I).

He goes through his entire daily diet in there. I believe he said that he is having about three shakes a day when in regular mode and 4 when he is really working out hard. By the looks of him, he probably needs 3-4, where as I'm not anywhere near that.

Anyway, you can definitely get your protein and other vitals as a Veggie - but it's mostly a matter of EDUCATED eating, kinda to the point that BBFit said earlier.

My thing is - there are dumb meat eaters (3 Big Macs please) out there and there are dumb veggie eaters (3 super size french fries please) out there too. It's not so much what side of the dietary line you put yourself on - it's how intelligent you are.

And for the record, I'm all for killing the cows - I just don't want to eat them - so don't confuse me with a PETA person.
