Well I am 15, 6' tall and 182 pounds. For my age group my maximum heart rate is supposed to be 203. My problem is that whenever I hit my cardio hard at all, (and it doesn't feel like over training) my heart rate can get up to the 240 per beat region. It feels fine though, just a regular cardio session, not like I am in extreme pain. Anyone know what I should do?

if your heart rate was hiting 240, you would be dead. how are you getting this number?

What is your resting heart rate count the beats in 10 seconds multiply by 6....be careful not to count for both the lub and the dub (lub-dub) Being a veterinary tech I monitor animal heart rates daily....240 bpm is like that of a stressed cat....i think you must be counting both beats......If you are using the cardio machine readout it may be malfunctioning....I had that happened...I noticed it when I took my hands off and it still was giving a reading....lol

I did a 10 second count that landed on 40, and if I had made a mistake and counted the dup-dup as twice it would have been 120 which is lower than my target rate (140) and for the amount of cardio I was doing I was DEFINATLY about my target zone.

Btw another instance, When I used to have a personal cardio trainer a while back at a francise called acceleration, don't know if you have heard of it but it trains inclined running and the such. Anyways when my trainer came to check my heart rate in between running (about a 3 min break) she counted 10 seconds looked at me with big eyes and said "That is the highest heart rate I have ever seen, walk around for another 4 min and I will try again"

even if you know you were above your target zone, you still could not hit 240. unless you have tachycardia svt and the electric impulses that control your heart rhythm circulate unchecked, you can't reach this number, and if you did you would certainly not be performing any kind of cardiovascular activity — you would be in the hospital.

if you still think this happened, i suggest seeking the help of an electrocardiologist immediately.

It is very difficult to accurately take a pulse manually that is above 200.

Your maximum heart rate is not a level which you must not go above at all costs, it is a rough calculation of the fastest that your heart is capable of beating, you simply aren't able to go above the maximum.

As stated, it is a rough calculation, and there will be individual variability.

By all means go and see your doctor to get checked out, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Incidentally, do you get dizzy, palpitations or chest pain when your heart rate gets this high?

Ask your doctor if he can refer you for a GXT (Graded exercise test) done with a cardiologist, and a treadmill. This would be the most accurate for you.

Yep, definitely see the doc if you are getting symptoms.

Palpitations = awareness of your own heart beat, especially feeling your heart thump.

good luck, and let us know how you get on.

The GXT test is NOT for palpatations. It is a test to verify the condition of your heart.

sometimes really fit and "talented" people like Lance Armstrong gets HRs like 200 but that is considered "not human" :-) I have irregular heartbeats and still it should not read like that.. also 10 seconds might be too short to count very fast heart rate... I really cannot count my HR when I am doing speed workout.(HR around 180-188) it is very hard to count.
your cardiologist will do a stress test.. I had to walk 30 minutes on that thing to get my HR to 180. so get ready :)

also "chest pain" related to heart problems is like someone just punched your chest... not like your lungs are burning when you are trying to run... it is very confusing I know. best is to go to a cardiologist.

keep us posted. I hope everything will be fine. after the cardiologist you might want to invest in a heart rate monitor :)
