hello everyone. I have just recently started working out after being off for about 2 months and i've been back for about 3-4 weeks. eating healthy and working out 5 days a week. My problem is that i have friends coming to visit me in california for about a week. Needless to say i will be showing them around and doing quite a bit of partying. I'll be able to workout in the morning but i was wondering if that would even do me any good as i won't be getting the right amount of sleep or proper nutrition. So i can either take about 10 days off or just workout light to maintain. I just don't know which would be more beneficial since i've just started again and am just begining to get my old strenght back. thanks

if you think you won't be getting at least your 8Hr of sleep and enough real food, then you may want to workout light or it may be better to take those days off. The worst that could happen by taking them off is you getting more recovert time and you your muscles more time to build muscle, but you wouln't worry about lossing muscle. Basically, you don't have to worry about 'maintaing' during those 10 days since muscle builds while you rest.-------------- .:: How am I to know what I can achieve if I quit? :: oscarg@freetrainers.com ::. |

well maybe if you want the body you want you should get some self control and say no to the beer or liquer. Work out light do somthing eat as well as you can.-------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

My two cents.. all our goals are different and we all have different levels of dedication here.
As long as it doesn't interfere with reaching your personal goals and you set a plan for the time, do whatever you do to enjoy your life. If taking a week to have a good time with your friends is in the cards, then recognize that it's a week off of making any gains and will slow down progress but hey, they're YOUR goals. If you have time in the morning for a workout I personally would focus more on cardio to burn off all those empty calories!! -------------- : ] ~Danielle The deepest rivers flow with the least sound. |

I do have self control and do say no to beer, but i also know that moderation is key. I'm not going to feel guilty about having a week of partying with some friends that i see once a year. I just wanted to know how bad it was going to set me back in my return to lifting

If something makes you feel guilty, you should not do it. That pretty much applies to everything in life.
Justin, if you have the right approach to your fitness, then it won't be a problem. Keep up some maintence by working out when you can, eating as good as you can, sleeping as much as possible and drinking only in moderation as you mentioned. Like Dani said, you probably won't see tremendous gains, but you won't be starting back up from a hole either. Enjoy your time with your friends! |

I just wanted to make sure that in 10 days i wouldn't loose the muscle i just spent 4 weeks getting back. I will probably do a few light workouts. When working out to maintain what exactly does that involve? sets, reps, number of exercises per body part?

The key to not losing muscle during this time is eating right, so that your body won't try to burn the muscle because it's not getting what it needs on a daily basis.
If you're going to work out, do higher reps with lower weight of your usual splits, or if you're getting in less days break it into an upper body and a lower body. |

Thats my concern, i probably won't be eating the right foods for everymeal. I will still eat alot of food because thats my nature but it probably won't all be nutritious. But as long as i'm feeding my body fuel with a decent amount of calories should i be ok?...one thing though i will def. be eating a good amount of steaks as we will be cooking out alot so protein won't be a problem, will this help?

Hence my original comment.. if you will be eating to excess, and drinking a bit as well, you are more likely to end up adding a bit of fat than losing any muscle!

No. You will be fine. There will be no problems. Just do what you are going to do and eat what you are going to eat. You will be no worse off than your mind tells you that you are.
Enjoy your friends, get a little bit of workout in, and don't puke up your food after your meal. Enjoy. Live life. It's the only one you get (unless you are reincarnated). -------------- I will never grow up, just old. Jonathan |
