Hi.. My local gym has just got an infared sauna, i was wondering if anyone has used one? On the pamphlet it says it burns 1000 calories every 30 mins, and that at 45 degrees celcius fat becomes soluble and is burned faster, it removes toxins from the body.. this sounds almost too good to be true..

In*fra*red adj. 1. Of, pertaining to, or being electromagnetic radiation having wavelengths greater than those of visible light and shorter than those of microwaves.
2. Generating, using, or sensitive to infrared radiation.

what the hell guys? yeah so i didnt spell it right.. im asking a question if you have had any experience with an infrared sauna and your trying to give me spelling lessons.. Perhaps hecdarec is trying to point out the whole radiation side of it, but ive read on several different sites that infrared is completly harmless.. im assuming no one has actually used one then..

Well I found alot of info when I did a google search, but mostly marketing materials. You have to search with words like 'medical research' or 'clinical trials' to get anything useful.

The gist is this: Sauna's do offer those health benefits, they aid in weight loss, remove toxins (especially those that cling to fat cells and inhibit weight loss through diet and exercise alone), and improve cardiovascular health, skin, even the immune system. There are medical references to substantiate these claims, but the key here is 'When Used As Part of a Health Regimen' - including diet and exercise.

The advantage to the 'Far Infra-Red' saunas that have recently come to the forefront is that they use FIR rays to heat the object instead of using superheated air that causes so much discomfort (prickly heat, difficulty breathing, claustrophobia etc.).

copy/pasted:
In Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology, we find that producing one gram of sweat requires 0.586 kcal. The JAMA citation referred to above goes on to state that,

"A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 gms. in a sauna, consuming nearly 300 kcal - the equivalent of running 2 - 3 miles. A heat-conditioned person can easily sweat off 600 - 800 kcal with no adverse effects. While the weight of the water loss can be regained by rehydration with water, the calories consumed will not be." Since an Infrared Sauna helps generate two to three times the sweat produced in a hot-air sauna, the implications for increased caloric consumption are quite impressive.

here's one that says it's a lot of rot:

A few articles even indicated FIR saunas can improve male sexual performance (increase in nitric something or other) :surprised:

jask, you have to be really careful with how you use the sauna because if you don't do it right it will do you more harm than good. it's definitely NOT a weight loss quick fix unless the only excess weight you're holding is water.

to do it right you have to drink A LOT of water before you go in, otherwise your body will have nothing to flush out the toxins you're trying to get rid of.

when i get in the sauna i stay in until i feel like i've been flushed. i'm not in there to burn calories though, i do it to clean out my system and get rid of water i'm retaining for no reason. usually i'm out before 8 minutes, as i have no problem sweating.
