Get your triceps stronger, they are probably pretty weak then. You may want to start out by strengthening them with upper cable puller pushdowns with strict form, and some dumbbell work like like kickbacks, etc. You don't give a profile, so I am just assuming you are just beginning training. It is not uncharacteristic at all for new foks to have a hard time with these movement. If you have never done any weight training in your life, chances are your triceps are very weak, as they are normally not used to operate the remote control.

do other exercises for your triceps and pecs then after a couple weeks, retry them

Ahhh...dips...great way to finish off a chest or tri. workout..or great exercise all on their own. The only way to get truly better at something is by doing that something. If you can only get the negative portion in then try to go from lockout to parallel in 5-10 seconds. Repeat that for about 5-10 times. If you can do a couple consectutive sets of 5-10 second "falls" try to push up when you get to parallel. Try that method for a few weeks, and then go back to regular paced dips and coming back out of the hole. What ever you do, don't give up, dips are wonderfull! I hope some of this helps.

oh man I feel your pain - when I started (about 4 months ago) I could only do 7, now I am up to at least 4 reps of 15. Keep working out, each time do a few more. Good Luck!

You will make progress; they are alot like pullups. Hard. I started with one. Now I can do about 30, and I go way low on the down cycle, nearly bringing my shoulders to my hands (recommended by Men's Health for deeper tri workouts) and my tris have come a long way, like my shoulders.
Speaking of that, has anybody found some natural strong points that surprised you? for me, it's tris and shoulders; they've grown so much

When I started doing these, I found them much easier if I kept my legs bent, rather than straight - means that your feet, not just your tris, take some of your weight. I switched to straight-legged dips after my triceps got stronger.

Ogun - yes, the weight that I can push with my Tri's is relatively high compared to other exercises. I have been plesantly surprised! I have also seen some good development and definition in my shoulders. Just hoping the size will start to come with the increased weight!

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
