Is there any harm in working out right before you go to bed? My wife says she read it was bad for your body to exercise right before going to bed. I normally work out in the morning time, but due to doctor appt. for my kids I had to wait until 9:00pm to work out. I drank my Whey protein shake right afterwards so I see no harm. Any replies would be appreciated.

There are alot of people that work out late at night I dont think it's a big deal.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it is gone past me I will turn to see fear's path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

The trick is to not go to bed right away.... You're body is all wound up and ready to roll... so shower, relax and wait a bit... at least that is my understanding... I work out in the evening and hit the hay around two to three hours after...

I would say it isn't a bad thing at all, i workout at night and as TimDay said you should wait for approximetly an hour before you go to bed.

I agree with the wait time but an important part of exercise is the nutrients that you take right after the workout so remember to eat. Since you don’t want to go to bed in that depleted state.

The only reason it would be bad is if you don't "recover" from it. Meaning, if you go to bed in a catabolic state. Never, ever do this. Have your protein shake, and if you can try to fit in a small meal before bed of slow digesting proteins(casein) and some fibrous carbs, even some good fats if it is in your diet. This will give your system something to work with and help you recover(rebuild).

What would be an example of slow digesting proteins?

Thanks...

Any casein protein. Cottage cheese would be a very good bet. Depending on your calorie needs, something like this would be good(as mentioned, fit to your calorie needs)...1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 tbsp. flax seed(great fiber), leafy green salad with Newmans own olive oil dressing, and 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter or 1/2 oz. or so of walnuts or almonds. This will even further slow digestion. Casein protein actually gels in the stomach upon digestion, thus a slow release of amino acids into the bloodstream. You could also buy a blended protein mix, add a tbsp. of flax oil, but I think with doing your drink right after training, the meal option would be better served for you.

Thanks alot! I work out in the evening... just finished in fact, and it's good to know what I can have before I hit the hay a couple of hours later.

Thanks!

You want your recovery meal after your PWO shake to be of protein and fats. Fats will slow the digestion, leave you feeling satiated, and have no effect on serum insulin levels. This should be about an hour after your PWO drink.

I always seem to sleep better when I work out in the evening. I do my routine, have a pro-shake, then tv and a snack and I am out like a light.
