Okay, heres the deal, Im an ex-collegiate football player (about 3 years out) and I have softened up quite a bit, Im 5'11 about 204 (19% body fat). I have started to get really serious about lifting and doing cardio. My goal is to maintain muscle while losing this ugly body fat. Diet is so hard for me to get a grasp on. I know that everybody hates dieting, but is there a certain amount of days/weeks that it just becomes a habit and the cravings settle down?
thanks

Yes, if you really put forth the effort, you will eventually become accustomed to it. It is a total lifestyle change that needs to be undertaken, not just a fad diet for a few weeks. Get your mindset going, you sound like you have the desire. Some people can jump right into these nutritional programs without missing a beat, others it is very hard for. In your case, being one of the latter, try easing yourself into it. Don't totally deprive yourself of everything right off the bat. If you do, it will lead most likely to unbearabale cravings at some point, and you will end up binging. Make slow, steady lifestyle changes in your eating habits. For instance, if soda is a problem, rather than cutting it completely out, start decreasing it and having some juice or water once or twice when you would normally have a soda. Slowly raise the frequency of the good(juice/water) to the bad (soda), and you will succeed. Welcome to FT by the way, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. We have many knowlegable folks on here who can help you even with motivation. Good luck to you.

Think of it as a gradual process leading to a healthier lifestyle. make small changes that you can live with so you don't get overwhelmed. Better health and fitness are all about making choices - something only you have the power to do.
Good luck, stick with your plan and you will get results.

Um...if I may... As much as I hate to admit this...I like the Bill (It's all about me!) Phillips idea.

Stick to your diet religously for 6 days a week. On the 7th day, eat what you want. Within reason, of course. I think of it as a reward for being good for the last 6 days.

Well I give myself little treats from time to time.. like last night after a huge workout I had a steak and cheese. That's my treat. But I wouldn't go completely crazy on those days off. I wouldn't wash it down with a 2 liter of soda and a bag of Doritos followed with some Ben & Jerrys. You'll really shoot yourself in the foot that way.

LOL...That's the kind of "treat" I meant DRIO.

My treat is usually a steak and pasta w/ alfredo sauce.
