This will probably sound like a stupid question but here goes. I am working out with a trainer right now, so no problem, but I am thinking about "doing it on my own" after this session ends. I still feel very intimidated by the free weight section of the gym but mainly I am concerned, if I do go there to workout by myself, HOW do I remove those heavy heavy weights to put on the lighter ones that I use? I mean, I am using the 45 lb ones (x 2) on some of the machines but mostly 10 - 25. I am not a "cute young thing" who can bat her eyelashes and men will come running to help. What should I do?

I would not feel afraid to ask anyone there to help you out...most guys in my gym would do it in a heart beat.....ask someone!

That is what I was "afraid" of doing, not wanting to "bother" the guys, but if you really think it would be okay, that would be great! There are several guys there who are very friendly when I am working out with my trainer, because most of them know him. I still have 14 more sessions with James, so maybe I will pay more attention to who is there all of the time. I really want to use the free weights because I feel that I am past the regular machines for most exercises. Thanks.

I have said something to James and he said just ask one of the guys or one of the trainers, but I am actually a very shy person and hate to bother others. I guess I am going to have to get out of that huh?

People should re rack their own weights. If you see someone get off an apparatus you want to use, and not remove their weights, it is perfectly acceptible to ask that person to remove their weights. Only a real Pr**k would not do this. I am very guilty of this myself, due to my gym being so crowded, and I do a lot of supersetting type stuff, so if I see an opening on a machine I want, I might get right off the one I am on and run over to it to get my set in. But if someone asks me to remove them, I have no problem doing so.

That's for sure! That is one thing I have noticed that some of the guys have hunderds of pounds on and they do not remove it. That messes up the routines also, taking that extra time to change up all of the weights. If I am going to be working in an area where two of the routines are performed right next to each other, James usually will get me started on my reps and, while watching me, will change the weights on the other equipment so I can keep up my pace. Some people only think of themselves though.

I'll help ya, where are they?
I guess you are talking about something heavier than a 45lb plate? That is the heaviest we have at our gym. It is inconvenient and annoying not to be able to go right from one thing to the next, but I figure putting the plates on and off is part of my workout. (I'm glad my husband is there to help though when I have to put 7 plates on each side of the leg press and then take them off again though!) I've seen lots of guys ask for help when they need a spotter, would asking for help with weights be much different?

I would not worry at all about asking for help. I have to ask for help sometimes to lower the cable on the cable machines because I'm so short; I've never had anyone refuse and most people are very friendly and helpful when it comes down to it.

The heaviest we have at my gym is 45 lbs and I rarely have to move more than a few. Yesterday I took the 45 lb plate off the calf machine and went to put it on the rack and instead accidently started putting it on the machine the guy next to me was getting ready to use. He had one or two on there already and he looked at me like, "You mean I have to do that one, too?" ROFL
