3 day holiday weekend. What to do?

Easy! 8 tons of grade #4 river rock for landscaping the front yard. Yes, that's 16,000 pounds. Good news is I'll have to move it all shovelful at a time (approximately 75 feet from dump pile to destination). The better news is it looks like the 8 tons will only solve about half of our landscaping needs! So I'll be ordering AT LEAST another 16,000 pounds tomorrow. 32,000 pounds of the original free weights! Boy the testosterone is in the air!

So, you think anybody would mind if I go easy at the gym on Monday???

Hey Lewdog, maybe you could convince your B-Ball and Track coaches to send you and the teams to the saxman's house for some outdoor "training"! Just look for the pile of rocks and listen for the old man moaning!

Hi Sandy! Day 1 is over. 2 days to go. I'm not sure I'll EVER be able to step foot in the gym again. You see, you have to WALK to get to into the gym, and right now I'm saying OUCH after every keystroke. Walking is right out of the question!

Not yet Sandy...

Of the 16 tons, about 6 tons are in place. 10 tons to go. Ugh. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll need yet another 8 tons to complete the whole yard - so really, 18 tons to go.

My sweetie saw me struggling by the end of the third day (she was helping, too!), so she was calling all the local rental places to see about getting one of those Bobcat digger thingies to help her "totally buff" hubby. She needed to assure me how macho I was in order to keep the male ego thing in check... and to keep my crying and whimpering to a minimum.

No luck yet on the Bobcat, but I have mixed emotions. This is truly a monumental task just begging for some machinery to assist... on the other hand, it sure would be cool to have bragging rights of moving 24 tons of river rock by hand! Think of all those people I'd impress in the hospital beds next to me!

Yo Mutt!

You got a deal! I'll provide transportation. Chicken and steaks on the grill ok? I’ll even fry up onions and peppers to make some of those famous Mutt fajitas. As you can see from my pictures, a lack of food ain’t the problem around here. Hell, I’ll throw in beer, too (lite, of course!), or some “whey-tinis” or “whey-garitas” for the mixed drink upper-crust fitness crowd.

So, what do you think, should I start planning the shoveling party at da saxman’s house? Maybe turn it into a watered down strongman event – shoveling river rocks, lifting river rocks, moving river rocks, throwing river rocks, etc... Well?

I'd send da saxman's private jet, but, uh, I don't have one (yet!). How 'bout I swing by in da saxman's Dakota? Looks like this "rock" party is turning into a road trip... And all that talk of grilled chicken and steaks is makin' me hungry.

Ya know, Mutt, if we can get a couple more New Yorkers and/or Pennsylvanians to join this cause (and pick them up on the way, of course), we'd all have a lot more time to enjoy the food, drink, and beautiful SW PA weather!

...guess the steaks are all mine, then!

BTW, how big are the little Muttster's arms? Doin' any DB curls in the high chair yet? Have fun, Mutt, and enjoy. Kids may seem to be high maintenance, but they are a load of fun. And watching them grow up is the most rewarding thing in the world. Yes, even more rewarding (I have discovered) than shoveling river rock!

LOL - The poor guy is fine, Sandy - really! Shame on me for playing the sympathy card.

Trust me, the rocks will wait for me. No rush, no self-imposed deadlines, no hurry, just shovel the rocks when I can. It may take me a month, but it'll get done. Besides, it would seem that Mutt's got his hands full!

Oh, that's just great, Sandy - you had to mention chocolate! Damn it! You know how easily distracted I get! That's why I got river rock instead of pea gravel. Pea gravel (though much easier to shovel) looks like Raisinettes.

Thanks for the offer Scott. Lots of good food is a small price to pay for the help!

So, no other offers from any folks from, let's say, Australia? England? Africa? North Pole? Venus? All of my good help seems to be a million miles away! What's up with that? Where are all the loyal Saxman followers in Southwestern PA?

And another thing... What's up with da Saxman always referring to himself in the third person? "Da Saxman is shoveling rocks!" and "Da Saxman likes chocolate!" and "Who wants to help da Saxman!". How stupid does THAT sound?! No wonder no one local wants to help me shovel - they know me all too well and I sound like a moron!

There. Da Saxman feels better now.

All the neighborhood parents warn their kids...

"... and on your way home from school, kids, remember to say no to drugs, don't talk to strangers, look both ways before crossing, and most importantly, don't walk by the weird rock man's house!"

Then in 100 years, the stories...

"...rumor has it, the guy who lived in the old Saxman house went insane shoveling all those rocks... took him 30 years! And then he killed 10 people with his shovel!...Legend has it that if you stand in the middle of the yard, and listen real closely, you can still hear him shoveling..."

Dave: I'm going to be on a Soldier Qualification course some time over the summer, and I know that trench digging is a hell of a cardio workout. Good food and a chance to get my shoveling down pat for this summer is a great deal in my books :D

Yo saxman! I am late on the post since the holiday weekend is over by now, but I am only 4 hours away, and I LOVE steak and chicken. Now if I can only find time in a 70 hr. construction work week. Add to that teaching 3 nights a week at a local martial arts school, and finding time for my own workouts at home and at the school, and I don't think I could pick up a shovel anyway. A shame too, because I could bring a guitar and we could entertain the troops! Have fun with your rocks, man.

Yo John! All that, and you still find time to train? Man, you are a machine. I sit on my butt all day at my job. Martial arts AND the equivalent of 2 construction jobs (and a musician, to boot!) - Sheesh - I should be ashamed of myself, complaining about a measly couple tons of rocks. Sound like you've got your work cut out for you.

It isn't as bad as it sounds. I take way too many breaks.(shh...it helps bein' the boss). And the guitar thing is just a 'living room' hobby, ongoing for 24 years, so I only do that when I can lift it. I love it though...it is my stress release. The martial arts are my 'cardio', so that saves some time. Other than that I lead a boring existence. You sound just as busy with your mountain of rocks to move.

Later man,
John
