Diet Myths
There are many myths regarding bodybuilding and diet.

Myth 1) Fat makes you fat!

Reality) Ingesting more calories than you expend/use creates a storage of fat. Fat does however have twice as many calories as carbs or protein per gram!

Myth 2) Too much protein is bad for you.

Reality) There were previous studies done in the '50's that showed that too much protein is bad for the kidneys. This was accepted for years without much thought. These studies however were conducted on patients with prior kidney problems. A person with healthy kidneys should be just fine at .6-1.5g of protein per pound of bodyweight per day.

Myth 3) Eating before bed will make you fat.

Reality) Perhaps if you are a couch potato who lives of pork rinds, hot dogs and beer! But a natural bodybuilder needs to ingest protein before bed to ensure a supply for the long night of fasting ahead!

I would like to add:

myth 4) any food with "diet", "light" or "low fat" in the label is a good choice

reality) many low fat and diet foods have more refined sugars (or sodium) to make up for the missing fat-light can sometimes refer to color!-also, people sometimes take these words as permission to eat them in enormous amounts. Best bet: eat a variety of satisfying healthy whole and fresh foods in healthy, moderate amounts.

Also, watch out for high amounts of "HFCS," or high fructose corn syrup. It's known to go through a complicated process in the body which will inhibit the body's ability to burn fat and it leaves the hunger switch "on..." Can't remember which magazine, but basically the quote was "Drink a six-pack of Mountain Dew and your body hardly registers that you've had anything; take in the equivalent number of calories from a Thanksgiving dinner, and you feel full."

As a general rule, if your read the ingredients of something and it has HFCS as the first or second ingredient, AND has 8g of sugar listed or more, walk away from it.

I know I'll probably catch alot of hell for this one, but:

myth 5) Carbs are evil!

Reality: as said above with myth 1, ingesting more than you use is what makes you fat! All carbs are sugars; though they vary in structure and insulin response, they are all broken down by the body into glucose - a simple, High GI sugar...

I couldn't agree with you more Rev, I have ingested more high glyceminc carbs before and after my training as well as first thing in the morning (and more carbs overall), and I have become leaner than I ever would have imagined. My goal was to put on a little weight, but I have actually lost some while looking more full and much larger. It all comes down to how clean your diet is and calories in vs. calories out. People ALWAYS make it harder because they think that for some reason there has to be a complicated secret formula for quick weight loss. Well, unfortunately, there isn't. Just hard work, dedication and discipline.

Ditto on that DA.
I think people are starting to think that there's a secret weight loss formula because of all the misinformation given over the past few decades. Far too many plans have pushed severe calorie restriction and people figure, "If I can't lose weight by eating next to nothing, then how is it possible to lose weight?" All you have to do is stroll over to NAAFA.org and read the articles. Some people really believe that being fat is almost completely genetic!
