I can't give my legs a propper workout coz my arms are struggling... any suggestions?

Are you talking about stiff legged deadlifts? Or regular deadlifts. If the reg kind your legs while used in the lower half should not be doing the majority of the work, your lower back should. I suggest 2 things, one is that you use light weights, and two is that you get someone to show you how to do them.

Like Mutt says if you are doing Deadlifts, thAT exercise is for the lower back. You should have a slight bend at the knees, but not more. Get an experienced person to show you how, and check out the exercise description om here.
It is a good exercise if done properly.
Stiff leg/straight leg deadlift is for the hamstrings, check that out as well. Hand placement is also different for both exercises.

The one I'm talking about is one that is very similar to squats, apart from that, you let the weight hang infront of you, rather than resing on your trapezius.... would you recommend me doing squats or these deadlifts for building up my legs?
Can I do squats on a Smith machine?

You can do squats on the smith machine. It's safer for beginers. Deadlifts are not for the legs as they target the lower back. Straight leg deadlifts will do the hamstrings. Incorporate the sqats and the St leg deadlft, you will do fine.

Try holding the bar with ione hand facing out and one hand facing in, that stabilizes it and it won't feel as much like you are going to drop it. I know what you mean, my hands cramp up as soon as I go over 115 lbs, just not enough grip strength built up. i use lifting straps occasionally, but don't like to rely on them, your hands will get stronger as you progress, but if you grip affects your foem tha n back down on the weight and focus on good full range of motion form until your hands are stronger.
