I was just wondering; what do you guys look for in a pair of good training shoes, and what brands can you all recommend? I realize it comes down to personal choice, but I would still be interested in knowing what other people think is the best shoe.

fit is the most important, you want to make sure they are comfortable for your foot since you will be doing an extreme amount of training. There are so many different preferences out there but my personal choice is Nike Xcellerator's. I have used them for 4 years now and I love them. But, as I said, you want to make sure the fit is well so as to support your foot, fallen arches, arches, toes, to make sure nothing is being crushed into the shoe. We have a great place over here (REI) where you can try the shoe on and run around for a bit to make sure your feet are comfortable in them.

Good Luck!

It really depends on your goals. For example, in powerlifting, the special shoes that are made for that can really make a difference. I guess the same can go for any other sport. If you just need shoes for basic working out, I would think that any good sneaker or cross trainer would do. I like Nike.

All of the above is very important, but if you are going to run with the shoe take a lool at the back and squeeze the heel in to the soul. it should have some give. It also depends on your body weight also on how long the shoe will last. I try and look for a shoe that will give me at least 300 miles of running. Saucony has some nice models.
