Confused newbie here....what is the best method of working muscles.... split routine or whole body? I only want to be in the gym 3 days a week due to traveling distance. I have been doing everything, including cardio, 3x a week. Am I overtraining? My goal is to lose weight, which I am doing, and build a little muscle. ~ thanks

What about:

First day: pecs, triceps and shoulders
Second day: legs and calves
third day: Back and biceps

Work your abs every time for around 10-15 mins, some stretching and 20-30 mins of cardio AFTER the weight training.

This will take you around 1 1/2 hour.

Now you are not over training. If you feel tired, lost of appetite, not motivated etc then YES you are over training.........

If you are brand new, then I would suggest 3 days full body workouts. After acclimation, about 3 months or so, then you can switch to a split workout. What this full body workout does is get your muscles that havent been used a chance to tone and catch up with all other body parts, they will all be used to being trained. Then the split helps to intensify the workouts for more heavy targeting of the muscle groups. Hope this helps.
