I've been doing straight leg deadlifts like instructed but have found that I am having a hard time working my hamstrings. When lifting I do try and flex my glutes, lower back and hamstrings but my lower back gets most of the work. Any tips on maybe what I am doing wrong or what would help are appreciated.

I've suggested to several people that they use one of the lower cable pullies if they are available. Use a relatively light weight and take it slow so you can concentrate on the muscle being worked. Some things take a greater mind/muscle link to really work the target area. Superset the dead lifts with hamstring curls and see how you like it.

I would suggest to use less weight...this exercise does not need large amounts of weight to work

Do Keystone deadlifts. Instead of just bending over and back up again, stick your butt out (like the Keystone cops, hence the name). The bar won't go much past your knees, but you'll feel an awesome stretch in the hamstrings. Just by sticking your butt out, it transfers the working muscles from your back to your legs. Be sure to keep your back straight through the entire motion.
