I am 26 5'9 I up to 285lbs. Due to my weight being so high I now have high blood pressure, I have been taking medication for it. I need to lose 30lbs safely. The sooner I loose the weight the sooner I am able to get off the medication. I am in no danger of a heart attack or something like that. I have a member ship at a gym how much of what exercises should I do. Right now I either walk or ride the bike and then hit the weights. Another ? I am interested in weight training. I want to look good but I am not wanting to get big I only want to get smaller. Can anyone help me?

I would suggest you try a beginner program here on ft, under excersize plan. Then
Go into the nutrition area and put in your coordinates and your caloric needs will be done .
If they have a trainer at your gym it is a good idea to have him/her for 1 sesion to get you on track.
As far as the blood pressure goes, you will definately see it drop.
My wife was high bp on meds etc, and started cardio and weights, now no meds and great bp.
Keep your goal in mind and you will do it.
By the way welcome to the site and feel free to ask for help anytime. There are great motivators on here 24/7.
Good Luck.

I also want to mention I am not a beginner. I am willing to work hard for my goals but I need to know what to do to get there and how much. I am able to do alot now but I dont want to hurt myself and I dont want to get any bigger. I have not lifted weight for 1.5 weeks due to I gained weight instead of loosing weight.

Quoting from brendaaa:

Now sorry to say but that's a very bad reason to stop......
Muscle mass is heavier than fat BUT muscle mass is sooo much leaner (and smaller!!!)

Do as Carivan says (fill in your profile) and just don't give up. Follow an exercise program and eat healthy and you'll soon be okey!

Ok I was going to leave it alone, cause much has been written before but I feel that it needs to be said to help her out. Just like Philia said muscle weighs more and takes less space. You need tolift in order to loose. DO NOT USE A SCALE!!!!!!! I can not say that any more forceful. Please, take it from me I have been fighting the weight thing for 20 years. Use a tape measure used for measureing cloth. Measure your waist to get a baseline measurement. Once a week or so take it again. You will see it slowly go down. Here is the thing you need to know.....lifting weights WILL NOT MAKE YOU HUGE IN SIZE UNLESS YOU LIFT THE RIGHT WAY/HAVE GREAT GENES!!!!!! OK? You need to lift very heavy, eat hughe amounts of food, and have the best genes to look like a bodybulider. Another thing Do not be afraid to eat...I know it sounds crazy, but you really need to eat to loose. Try to eat 5-7 small meals made up of protein, some carbs and fats as well. Trust me this will work. Please browse the other posts here and you will see the same message posted time and tiem again. Hope this helps....oh yeah...the more lean muscle mass you bulid the more fat you will burn ...neat huh?

Yeah! Hit those weights..um would'nt it work better if you lifted them instead? LOL just kidding.....seriously, I weigh in at 300 I am 6'1" tall but I have no bloodpressure problems, no cholerstol problems, my heart rate is in the athletic range and I feel great most of the time. What I am trying to say ( and when people find out how much I weigh they are surprised) is that weight lifting will help you out more than you can believe. good luck!

I started dieting in January, and the personal trainer at my gym suggested that I work with heavier weights, and to do legs twice a week (My schedule is M-Chest/Back, W-Legs, F-Arms/Shoulders, S-Legs). I remember all the comments I got from some of the women I knew (one an aerobic instructor) who insisted that I'd better watch out or I'd bulk up.

Well, six months went by, and yes, I did put on quite a bit of muscle (per my bodyfat analysis). But I also went from wearing a size 12 to a size 6! I have never been as muscular in my whole life, and I haven't been so small (clothing size wise) since I was a teen-ager. Also, I can't remember a time when I've gotten as many compliments from the opposite sex. (and so many women think that men find muscle unattractive on females)

Lifting weights is the best thing I've ever done to increase my metabolism and reshape my body.

For men, it takes a lot of time, a lot of weight, and a lot of food to bulk up-and even then, some of them have a hard time, and they have the testosterone to make big muscles. We lack the hormones to get bulky, and even if we could, it's not like we'd wake up one morning to find out we look like Arnold……we have lots and lots of time to make adjustments as our body changes.

I was once on blood pressure medication. One of the best things that worked for me was interval training at least three days a week. I did some lifting but that was secondary. Took about 8 months but got my cardiovascular system going and was able to kick the meds. After finally losing most of the weight I needed to I switched to a building routine. Best wishes, it is very do able. In fact my father who was also on high bp meds saw what happened with me followed suit and is now of his meds.

Yes awesome success stories on this board.
Lifting the weights will not give you unwanted results. Lifting weights will give you INCREDIBLE results.

Hit those weights and tells us what you see and feel. I am positive that you will be happier.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.
