Okay, so there is no way in heck I can do a chin-up, but it's on my workout roster, so... what can I do instead, and whats the quickest way to build up to doing a chin up(without looking like a fool in the gym ;))

Wow is that really our Alorle who's back?!!!!!!

How are you?!!!!!!!

I'm bad at chin ups as well. Make somebody to help you up and control your way down (negative work) Do that regulary and one day you'll be able to do it alone!!

An alternative to chin ups is wide-grip lat pulldowns. Grip a little wider than shoulder width, keep your elbows back and a slight arch in your lower back. When you pull down, do not lean back because this negates the effort on your lats and puts strain on your lower back. Perform these on your back day then make the attempt at one chin-up. Over time, increase the number of chin-ups you perform after your pulldowns, while lowering the number of reps you perform on your pull down. This will give you more strength to perform your chin-ups and you will get to the point of just performing chin-ups.

Keep up the great work!

Phila2 is right. Get a spotter and cross your legs together. Have the spotter hold your ankles lightly and just give you an assist. Do about 6-10 of these assisted, and watch how fast you will be able to start doing them on your own. Some gyms have weight assisted chin apparatus, this would be really helpful to you. Lat pulldowns can be substituted, but there really is nothing like wide grip chins for the back. Don't worry what people think of you in the gym. We are all there for the same reason, and everyone had to start somewhere! Go for it!

When I was in the Marines I had lots of problems with pullups - as did many others in my units. I can tell you that the most common response to this problem was to perform wide-grip pulldowns to build that area.
I am sure that using pulldowns will work over time, but for me I never increased my pullups to the magical 20 until I started doing heavy weight bent-over rows (barbell and single-arm dumbell). I mean HEAVY. I could do the stack on the pulldown machine and it never increased my pullups more than a 3-4 reps. But once I actually starting putting on lean muscle in the back everything changed (I also lost about 8 pounds of fat). Many people disagreed with me on this issue, but I rarely saw the problem pullup guys significantly increase their reps without cheating (using the "kip" movement, in other words).
Those were the good old days...today I can barely do 7 pullups. DOH!

You are so right about that lumina20. You do need to find a QUALITY spot. That sometimes is worse than not having one at all! I have had people on the bench for example try to show how strong they are, and grab the weight with one hand. The easiest way to get someone hurt. A good spotter should just aid you enough to complete the rep. Very good thought, I didn't think of that one.

Hi LindiYou can try chins between chairs its not a bad way to start. FT has it outlined here with description and picture. Typicly lay on the floor between two chairs using a broom handle accross the chairs grasp the broom and pull yourself up try to raise whole body leaving heels on the floor. If you can't bend at the waist just lifting your top section till you can do the whole body. this you can do at home with no one watching. Good luck

Alorle, I had the same problem as you. I did three sets of pull-ups, the reps were 1 0 0. I was actually so embarressed to get someone to spot me that I used the cleaning lady as a spotter, when of course the gym was empty. Well she caught on and started to drag me to the bar and spot me when there were pretty women around it. Trust me the top of all embarressment is being yell at by the cleaning lady to do more in front of pretty women, from a guys point of view. Well anyway, I kinda of use the embarressment as a drive to do more. Besides if anyone laughs it nots worth knowing them anyway. I have progressed excellently since then and am actually fastening weight to myself while I do them now. Good luck.

Hi there. I had problems doing chin ups as wel. I only could do them 5 ties while the program subscribed 16. i found a solution in using the 'Easy power station' from 'technogym' ( I don't know what its called ). maybe you know the machine. It a platform witch supports you as much as you want. You can ajust the weight.

I wil give you the url so you can see what I mean. ( englisch is not my native language so sometimes it is hard for me to explayn what I mean.)
