For a short and to the point answer, immediately pre and immediatley post training a pure whey is your best bet. Another time whey is beneficial is immediately upon rising,to get some nutrients into your muscles after hours of catabolism at night. It is the fastest digesting, when your muscles are screaming for nourishment after a hard training session. For the rest of the day, a blend is more in order.

Soy protein is for people who are lactose intolerant. If that includes you, do that, but if you are able to handle dairy products, do the whey, it is much quicker to the blood stream and is realeased slower giving oyur muscles more fuel for growing lean muscle mass.

Hmmm I'm not saying the contrary but it's quite weird: I'm intolerant to lactose (cannot handle any diary products) BUT I got nooooo problems after drinking my Whey shakes..... (as long as I don't mix it with milk of course!!! ;o)
I also got a "Tri-protein mix" -different kind of protein sources mixed together and this one is great before bed time since it takes longer for the body to absorb.
Ka, take a look out there, read a little and try some different protein brands. You'll see how your body responds.
