I am trying to lose weight and tone up and want to do this quickly, I know, everything takes time, but is it really harmful to not rest on days in between workouts? I would think that if I exercised 5-6 days instead of 3-4 that I would see results faster? Or am I just going to overdo it? PLease help, I want to look good by the end of May!!!

We need more info. You'll get a lot of differing opinions on "how many days" but in my opinion it's not a big factor with the average workout by an average person in the gym. I've gotten my best results ever on five day splits but my work schedule has had me on the road about three weeks a month for the last two years. I can normally get in 3 and sometimes 4 good workouts a week and I'm maintaining but not developing like I can on a 5 day routine. As for faster, you've probably already read on this site that nobody recommends fast. Develop a routine you'll stick with and a diet that supports the workouts and you'll show good progress. Diet is the most important part of the whole process.

Depends on the intensity, volume, etc of your workouts...you can workout everyday under some parameters...however it's still best to have 1-2 days off....and particularly in between consecutive workouts...I generally suggest a day off after every 2-3 consecutive workouts....
Lift weights 2-3 days a week...and do cardio the rest of the days if you feel like it....creating a successful program is as much art as it is science....everyone is different...you may have faster recovery rate than average person so then you may be able to sustain more workouts or high volume/intensity...etc...the lesson is to experiment...see what works for you.....and listen to your body, if you start feeling sluggish, have difficulty sleeping or falling asleep, difficulty eating, etc....then take few days off and adjust your workouts with lesser frequency....on the other day if you can go 7 days a week nonstop...invent an 8th day and exercise on it also..;)

I was thinking that I could do like my legs and arms on one day, and then the next do my abs and maybe some cardio the next, and go back and forth like that during the week, and then relax somewhat on the weekends. My hubby and I have been doing yard work, and before last weekend I couldn't do a single pushup to save my life, and now after raking a lot I can!!! I am so excited.

You plan looks like a good one. I generally do weights M,W,F and cardio T,Th,Sat and then I generally take Sunday as a rest day. I still may go for a long walk on Sunday or do a yoga class, but I'm not doing an intense workout that I do the other 6 days per week. This way I'm getting a full day of rest between weight days. Also remember that diet is key to weight loss and a 1-2lb per week is optimum.
Good Luck and welcome to FT!

Mike, menace, and fly have all made very good posts. I would only add that for someone just starting out, that you might keep your workouts fairly light to start, and hold off on the cardio. Only because you mentioned wanting to lose a little weight. I would save the cardio until the diet cannot produce the needed calorie deficit any longer.

Hold off on the cardio?? I thought that if you added cardio you would burn more calories, therefore lose weight faster? Am I just not getting it??:(

Actually cardio is good for that to apoint. Using weights first along with a lower cal diet (not too low though) along with a small amount of cardio will produce the results you want. Key is to lose body fat by building lean muscle. Now during this process you need to 1. eat right. 2. train with WEIGHTS. 3. add in cardio. ANd finally remeber this: fat takes up at least 2x the space as the same amount of muscle. so you could easily gain a bit of weight while losing inches. Think of it this way. fat is like a bag of potatos, and muscle is like a bag of sugar. 5 lbs of each weighs 5 lbs right? But look at the space they take up.

A small amount of cardio as mutt mentioned would be fine. But I would save the bulk of it for use when you get to a point when you can no longer healthly cut more calories from your diet. That time will come and you will then need another means of making a calorie deficit. Working out with weights will not onl define you but if done correctly, burn calories.
